Subject: Version 1.8

GEDitCOM II, version 1.8 was posted on 30 Sep 2012. The main purpose was to
"sign" the code, which seems to prevent MacOS Mountain Lion from
complaining the code is not signed and not safe to run (Apple now insists
all applications be signed by approved "Apple Developers" and I am one and
therefore able to sign it).

In the process, a few other minor issues were addressed such as improved
relationship calculations (as discussed on this list), fixes to scripts and
interfaces, search window remains active when switching to another app (a
user request), a menu command to empty cache used for the Place Advisor
(one user had a problem that this command fixes), and a better way to
control labeling in tree charts vs. tree outline columns.

Regards,
John Nairn

When launching GEDitCOM II, version 1.8, I get the following message:
"GEDitCOM II" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

Running on iMac 8,1 using Mac OS X 10.8.2.

Well version 1.8 is supposed to remove that (overzealous) message from Apple and does so in my testing.

First, make sure you are really using GEDitCOM 1.8. If you download 1.8, but have not removed older versions of GEDitCOM II,  a double click of a file is likely to pick the old one rather than the new one and the old one will have that message. A sure way to tell is to double click the new application icon to start it rather than starting from one of your genealogy files.

If you indeed have version 1.8 and are still getting the message, I will have to diagnose why the fix works for some people but not for you. In the meantime, you can change Mountain Lion security settings to allow GEDitCOM II to run and it will run fine. The application actually opens fine and it is just Apple choosing not to open it without giving you much useful advice on alternatives. I think you can even control click on the application and tell it to open.
