I got the message, but I can't find GEDitCOM 1.7.

Hi,

I really like the idea of the new mapping feature as I currently have my ancestors mapped on a google map layer, but would rather bring it in house.

I've bounded a map and called it UK, but can see how to add known residences already identified in my family tree to it. It appears that every place needs its own map, but they can't be combined. I suspect I'm missing something, is there a guide?

See http://www.geditcom.com/GCDown.html and it is free to registered users.

Upgrades are always on the same page.

The way I do it now is to add a map to one of the new place records and then add residences to that map as follows:

1. Zoom in on map until you can see the place.
2. Click on the location of the residence and the lat and lon will appear below the map
3. Copy and paste the lat lon text (e.g, "(43.3551, -73.2504)")
4. Create new point of interest (POI) by clicking "Plus" icon in front of any existing POI (or for first POI, just use the first empty one)
5. Paste the copied lat lon into the "Lat,Lon:" field
6. Enter name for the residence
7. Select residence from the pop up menu.

The residence will now show up only on that map for that place. You could create a place record for a country and put them all there or do the same for lower level (e.g., state, county, etc.).

This is a new feature and hard to predict how people would use it or imagine the best ways to use it. User feedback (here or direct to sup...@geditcom.com) will help us create new ways to use points of interest. The hard step is they always need the lat and lon to be able to appear on maps. The new mapping tool makes it easy to find those coordinates with a click.

I'd like to be able to add the lat/long to places and the new map tool is an excellent way forward. I don't want a map, just the lat/lon attached to a place. There isn't a lat/long field in the event details, which I feel there aught to be. With enough places lat/longd, then be able to plot them on a map using names/dates/families. etc as a filter, e.g. a map with all the 1851 census residences of the x family (in a further fantasy, be able to step through time on the map). I'm doing this roughly with layers in photoshop, but it's not going to work as I need it to be vector based

That can be done now (and a unique advantage of GEDitCOM II's "philosophy"). To allow entering lat and lon for any event or attribute:

1. Choose menu command "View->Open Format->Open Current Format in Editor". The GEDitCOM Editor will start and open the current format (assumed here to be the "Default Format"). This also assumes you installed the latest GEDitCOM Editor when you upgraded GEDitCOM II to version 1.7.

2. Expand the "Record Editing" section (it not already expanded) and click on "AttrDetails Record Editing". Copy this line

optionaltag _GPS,local("_GPS"),""

and paste into the "AttrDetails Record Editing" at the bottom of the template (along with the other "optionaltag" commands)

3. Repeat for the "BirthDeathDetails Record Editing" and "EventDetails Record Editing" templates

4. Save and test the template (click the green arrow in the GEDitCOM Editor or use the "Save and Run" menu command).

You can now do part of what you want. You can add a lat,lon field to any event or attribute. The data will be recorded, but GEDitCOM II won't do anything with it (besides save it in your file). I will plan to look for this field in the next version and see what kind of mapping features can be added.

One Enhancement:

The above changes let you add the field, but it shows up at the bottom of the window and looks out of place (in my opinion). To integrate it more in the events and attributes:

1. repeat step 1 and 2 above, but in step 2, copy this line instead

ShowAll _GPS

and paste it after the line "Show ADDR"

2. Repeat for the "BirthDeathDetails Record Editing" and "EventDetails Record Editing" templates but now paste three times after each "Show ADDR" line.

3. Save and run to test it

You now have lat,lon entry fully integrated into the Default Format for GEDitCOM II. It appears right after the address field because lat and lon of an event usually means the exact location or address for the event. If only a town is known, it could be entered as any lat lon in the town such as the town center.

The next release will try to make use of these new data for new features.
