According to the beta release notes, b4 supports offline data storage
but when I try to install Gears I am prompted that my browser is not
compatible. I use Firefox 3.5b4 on a MAC OSX 10.5.6.

Am running FireFox 3.0.9 on WinXPsp3; Closed down all browsers;
installed Gears 0.5.16.0;
Wished to be able to download all my Gmail to my hard drive in order
to be able to access it when internet is down.
Installation appeared to go well; however, according to description in
PcMag,
I need to now turn on feature in 'Labs tab in Settings. I'll see and
Offline link at the top of Gmail. I should then agree to trust the
Gmail site and click Allow.'
I can NOT find Settings> Labs. I do NOT see Offline link in Gmail.
How is Gears activated to work off line?

Same problem here: Gears is not compatible with Firefox 3.5b4.

Will Google fix this or are they going directly to use the HTML5
compatibility of the browser for a 'native' offline storage and
geolocation functionality?

Actualy, they've already released RC2:

and RC3 arrived (http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/

For any interested users using Linux, I've built some xpis from svn
revision which work with Firefox 3.5 on Ubuntu 9.04, Fedora 11, and
various other distributions:

32-bit: http://gkovacs.xvm.mit.edu/google-gears/gears-linux-0.5.25.0.xpi
64-bit: http://gkovacs.xvm.mit.edu/google-gears/gears-linux-x86_64-0.5.25.0.xpi

If you'd like to build it yourself, use the following commands:

sudo apt-get install build-essential subversion m4
svn co http://gears.googlecode.com/svn/trunk -r3373
cd trunk
wget http://gkovacs.xvm.mit.edu/google-gears/gears-gcc433.diff
patch -p0 -i gears-gcc433.diff
cd gears
make

What is this patch attempting to achieve. It seems to be mainly
cosmetic
and some commented out stuff that doesn't make sense to me.

Please explain your changes.
