There has been little activity on the PR front, but the mind is churning.
We don't seem to have any products: shirts, mugs, pens, etc. I am not sure that there is much of a desire within the community for this, but I am going to start making effort for myself. I prefer somebody with some better contacts to do the legwork (hint, hint).
Why? Convention season is coming, and I hit at least one (Baltimore Comicon). My girls also enjoy Katzucons and the like. It seems that getting around with something identifiable makes sense, and my family is nothing if not willing to do our part.
I will order some business cards and start plotting out my summer. Anybody with me on this?

I'm definitely with you on wanting some business cards. I found myself at WonderCon a couple of weeks ago unexpectedly, and was realizing how helpful it would have been to have some handy when talking to people.
On the merchandise front... I wouldn't mind seeing some offered, but I don't know that it would prove useful at a convention. We'd have to have a table or something, wouldn't we?
Looking farther ahead, we're two years away from our 20th anniversary, and I'd definitely like to put together a dog and pony show for the convention circuit that year.

Actually, thinking about it again, it would be nice to have a GCD t-shirt to wear *to* conventions.
My thoughts exactly. I am not sure we are ready for a table, but i would like to have some stuff on me (shirt, cards, etc) as i walk the floor and introduce myself.

My wife asked a very good question while she was on our site: where is the online shopping cart?
I have no good answer. Have we ever discussed an online store? Is there any reason we don't have one?

Because we are a database, not a business that buys and sells. When I use Ancestry.com, I do not expect a shopping cart when I look up things.

Being a database and a non-profit organization does not answer the question.
Her question comes from helping me brainstorm on a PR front. The GCD is not a business, but it is a community looking to expand. That expansion requires some level of brand awareness.
Her question comes from a community involvement front. I mentioned earlier that I am a member who would like to wear some GCD gear particularly as the convention season ramps up. Am I the only member within our community who wants to purchase GCD stuff?

At the moment we have nothing to sell. If we are interested in creating
and selling some GCD swag (t-shirts, coffee cups, etc) (and I have no
objections to doing so) then we need to add several things to the agenda to
cover the preliminaries:
* Agreement on what merchandise we wish to sell
* Design of said merchandise
* Decide on provider of said merchandise
* Decide if we are going to sell directly or if we will outsource and
collect commissions
I'm sure there are services out there that could take care of items three
and four. http://www.customlogos.com/services/, for example, is local to
me, though we'd have to take into consideration how large (or, rather,
small) our production runs would likely be and find someone who could work
within those limits.

Agree, concur and absolutely. This is my first salvo at the subject. I hope that the thread answers two questions: (1) Has this been discussed and resolved in the past? (2) Is there any interest from within the Board for me to start down this path?
I would hate to find out that this was discussed and dismissed, and I will not attempt this if there is no desire from the my esteemed colleagues on the Board. So I (im)patiently wait for more feedback.

I have no problem with selling GCD-branded stuff, thought it's not something I'm interested in. T-shirts, etc. might help with exposure at cons. It's one of those things that would be ok to do if it didn't take energy away from the main project.

I starting a recruiting campaign for this effort. I will be looking for somebody to help me come up with a plan to present to the Board, so no actual action will be taken without approval. If anybody is interested in helping me out, let me know. I will post a "Help Wanted" ad on Main, but I am also looking outside the GCD community for volunteers. It seems that we are essentially tapped out running at full capacity, and I wonder if I can attract non-indexers to start helping with our other efforts. I know, I know....noble goals, but we have alot of things we want to accomplish.

To be honest, I would really love to see a replacement made for our ad in Alter Ego, which is several years old and contact info woefully out of date.

I would hate to find out that this was discussed and dismissed, and I will not attempt this if there is no desire from the my esteemed colleagues on the Board. So I (im)patiently wait for more feedback.

At the moment we have nothing to sell. If we are interested in creating and selling some GCD swag (t-shirts, coffee cups, etc) (and I have no objections to doing so) then we need to add several things to the agenda to cover the preliminaries:
* Agreement on what merchandise we wish to sell * Design of said merchandise * Decide on provider of said merchandise * Decide if we are going to sell directly or if we will outsource and collect commissions
I'm sure there are services out there that could take care of items three and four. http://www.customlogos.com/services/, for example, is local to me, though we'd have to take into consideration how large (or, rather, small) our production runs would likely be and find someone who could work within those limits.

No opposition - I remember this coming up in the lists a couple of
times, and the conversation went like: "Wouldn't it be nice if we had
GCD t-shirts/caps/cups/etc?". Nobody was opposed to this, very few
showed active interest (I suppose Tony was the most enthusiastic!) -
then, nobody took it in their hands to organise it and the
conversation died out.
I think the hardest part is to agree on a design. If we had a compelling
modern design we could put in front of people's eyes, I think there
would be much more interest. Right now, it's harder to express interest
in the abstract. Does anyone know a graphic designer who could help;
I have a graphic designer colleague who I could ask for advice... Not
sure if we can find someone to do a design for free or we would need
to hire somebody.
By the way... I think I had asked about this a couple of years ago and
there *was* some opposition... but how about creating a GCD web forum?
Mailing lists and forums attract different audiences, and it might help
with bringing in some new people. The main difficulty would be to keep
the forum alive, since so many of the GCD old hands prefer the mailing
lists, and we're spread a bit too thin already.

I live with a graphic designer. We've discussed this before. I'll ask her to work something up and if she's willing, I'll get back to the group, soonest.

Right now, it's harder to express interest
in the abstract. Does anyone know a graphic designer who could help;
