One off-the-wall possibility -- probably not realistically doable -- is a section that gives optimal ini settings for certain games that display well only in certain formats or screen widths. I'm not sure how many there are. The standard distro used to have settings for Curses, for example, and IIRC, Chistminster needs a slightly wider screen to show the map? Some of the more outre z machine games that mess with colors maybe?

OK, I'll collapse it down to one variable (likely GLKDATA).

More documentation is a great idea. Even if no one else steps forward to
write it, I would very much appreciate input on what content would be most
valuable. The .ini comments are nice but I think probably unsatisfying to
    many players.

Apart from the .ini settings and the environment variables, I'm not sure
what other aspects of the runtime behavior people would want to customize.
    Any thoughts?

The .ini does still include custom settings for Curses and Photopia (the Glulx version).

I prefer that approach for game-specific tweaks so that all players benefit out of the box. If the game ships with a custom .ini, then there's no need to roll the fix into the core configuration, but otherwise it seems like a reasonable place to put them.

OTOH I would love to see a wiki / gallery of more elaborate Gargoyle customizations, with screenshots and the corresponding .ini settings. I've seen some truly beautiful examples online and been somewhat jealous that I couldn't take them for a spin without reverse engineering them first.

There's a lot that can be done if your hands aren't tied by the need to ship only cross-platform, open source fonts. Obviously that's the right choice for this project but I'd like players to be aware that they can make their own decisions.
