Yang Gong Fengshui from Five Arts

Most of us who read about feng shui may have come across the 24
mountains invented by Yang Jun Song. Looking at various five arts
sometimes makes me wonder about 24 mountains... I'll share my bits
here and hope to read your thoughts and views on this subject.

I have been thinking in the last couple of years - what is the theory/
basis behind Yang's invention for inserting the 8 heavenly stems and 4
trigrams into the 12 earthly branches to make up 24 mountains? Why not
12 palaces (earthly branches)? Why not 8 palaces?
As a reference, the 3 ancient formulas aka San Shi have these
differences:
1. Tai Yi Shen Shu uses 16 palaces
2. Qi Men Dun Jia uses 8 palaces
3. Da Liu Ren uses 12 palaces

Hi Meek,
My shallow thoughts on why 24 mountains.
Fengshui is about how heaven and earth (time and space) affects man.
Therefore it needs both the 12 earthly branches, representing earth
and also the 8 heavenly stems, representing time. The 2 earth stems
are omitted as they are already in the centre of earth. The 4 trigrams
at each corner (later heaven bagua) supports or interconnect the stems
above to the branches below to complete the system. The sequence of
alternating branch and stem/trigram is to achieve symmetry or balance
of the 24 mountains.

Wow! quahbkc, thanks for the clear explanation which is easy to
understand why the stems, branches and ba gua are used together.
As for the application, I can understand if there are 3 different
plates one on top of the other such as
10 stems on the top plate
8 trigrams (ba gua) in the middle
12 branches at the bottom
(I must say it seems very difficult to be used as a tool and I have no
idea how it can be used! You can see from my first post and this post
that my present mind is very much framed by the way of San Shi where
many plates are used on top of each other.)
The part of 24 mountains that I can't seems to grasp is the shifting
of 12 earthly branches to make room for the stems, then squeezing them
to make room for the guas. It seems a bit "forced" to me which is why
it's hard for me to see how this come about. Any clues coming from yi
jing theory, metaphysics terms, etc?

Hi moonchin,
As this is only a forum discussion, feel free to share the part of
your views which does not require "to be approved by" any one ... I
really would like to read what you and other members feel about the 24
mountains and discuss about it, that's all.
