I've followed all the steps appropriately (as described here:
http://www.gantry-framework.org/documentation/joomla/basics/installation),
successfully installed a working version of Joomla 1.5, and then
uploaded and installed the Gantry 1.5 framework, and then the Gantry
template successfully. I then chose the Gantry template as the
default. Yet, then when I go to view the root of th Joomla site in
the browser, I get this error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STATIC, expecting
T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /nfs/c01/h11/mnt/10807/
domains/jalaka.net/html/components/com_gantry/core/gantry.class.php on
line 31

I have no idea what this might be about. Any insights?

What version of PHP are you running?   Gantry only supports 5.2 or higher.

yes, according to my host, MediaTemple, the GS is running PHP Version
5.2.14 (http://s69855.gridserver.com/gs-bin/phpinfo.php5).

Any other insights into why its getting this error?

Have you looked at line 31 in the gantry.class.php to see what it is
trying to treference?

You haven't said which version of Gantry you are running so I can't
look for you.

It is possibly one of the following (in order of probability). Try
these one at a time and let us know which one worked:

1) php is not installed correctly. Add this line to the top of
the .htaccess file:
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
2) Access permission: check that the required files are set to 644 or
655 depending on your hosts settings and the template folder and sub-
folders should be 777.
3) Ownership Permissions - the ownership of the file is not the same
as the ownership of the site. Activate the FTP layer or ask you host
provider to switch on CGI-PHP
4) Corruption of the file: try reuploading the offending file(s) -
reinstall Gantry
