The latter is only to be nice to the user, Ganeti 2.1 always uses
daemon-util to start and stop daemons. Thanks for updating the

That's what I figured from what it looked like. You might also take a
look at a patch I have to keep applying to get it to work on Gentoo [1].
It appears that the absolute path for brctl is in /sbin rather than
/usr/sbin on Gentoo. I haven't looked at other distros, but it might be
a good idea to at least add something to the configure/make scripts to
find the paths of applications like that. If you prefer, I can create an
issue for it.
