Occasionally I get asked to recommend an “inexpensive” power amplifier for the GS401’s.

eBay is a wonderful resource for the Crown DC300 (usually 300A).  Crown was marketed as “Amcron” in some parts of the world, including the UK.

These 175 per channel amplifiers have supported touring acts for decades and are generally built like the proverbial brick outhouse.

There are rumors that Ira Gale stuffed one into a prototype Gale chassis for a trade show back in the day.

The bottom line is there are 20 of them for sale right now around the world (most are cosmetically challenged) ranging from $75 to $600.

Another amp that combines useful power (rated 100, actually closer to 150), lots of peak current (40A) and a civilised demeanour for not much lucre is the Audiolab 8000P.  All in a compact and unobtrusive package.

Best stick to the UK-built ones, the later the serial number letter suffix the better.

H/K Citation 19 is good as well and in use daily in my cave. Around 150 per channel with a 4 ohm load. I think I paid about $150 if I recall correctly. Low TIM design and really never sounds strained to me. Built like a tank and weighs 38 lbs.

Ebay is a good source but its certainly pushed prices and interest up in these amps. It wasn't long ago when you struggled to off load anything from the seventies/eighties and now its making decent money.

My personal favourite manufacturer Technics produce some lovely sounding amps but go for the pre plastic case stuff which came in early 90's.
There's a nice Technics SU-V85A 2x 150w RMS into 4 ohm on Ebay at the moment. Multi voltage input selectable for different countries. Its been bid up to £42.00 so far. I use an SU-V560 in my office at work for the last 10 years and it was rescued from a skip, sounds superb and has been faultless!

Back in the mid seventies Island Records who were one of the big players back then decided they had use for a 24 track mobile, sure enough the truck was kitted out with 'Amcron DC300A' amplifiers and Altec monitors......
