Hi Michael,

The reason we price Gaia Green as a subscription is because the layered map downloads are not a one-time cost for us. Layered map downloads require a great deal more bandwidth per download, and even storing additional layers on servers (such as the elevation relief) cost us money every month.

I'm sorry you don't see this as a good value, and all I can say is that we intend to continue improving both the base app, as well as the functionality provided by Gaia Green. We will, as always, keep listening to users like you and try and make Gaia GPS a great tool and value for as many people as possible.

I can also tell you that to this day, the earnings from Gaia GPS do not quite justify the investment we make in it, but we're OK with that for now. I don't think there is a single hiking app on the App Store that has as many people as we do supporting and building the app. We have a great deal of pride in our determination to keep improving Gaia GPS all of these years, and pride in the fact that we displaced the leaders in the space, one by one.

Regards,
Andrew

While I would gladly pay a one-time fee to add the features in the Gaia Green package, I think $19.99 per year, is way out of step with the rest of the program for this extra functionality. I would give thought to $19.99 on a one time basis (although that still seems out of proportion), but there is no way would I pay such a fee on a yearly basis for these features. As a long time user, I am very disappointed in the pricing model these features. I would expect something much more substantial in terms of added functionality to merit such premium pricing.

Hi there,

The reason we made Gaia Green a periodic cost is because the layered map downloads are a periodic cost to us, both to store and serve the maps up. Anything is possible, but it seems unlikely to me that we will change this to be a one-time cost.

Also, in v7.3 of Gaia, we are adding photo-syncing to GaiaCloud, so your photos will get backed up and synced long with your waypoints and tracks. For Gaia Green users only, we will sync the high-resolution version of the photos - this is another thing that will be a periodic cost to us, so it makes sense to price is as a periodic cost to users.

Regards,
Andrew

Is there any chance in the future that there will be a one time fee of the app instead of $19.99 a year? I agree that it is very disappointing finding out this is not a one time fee. I will not even consider buying it at the price it is now. If there was a one time fee of even as high as $49.99, I would buy it. Please consider dropping the price.

Hi Dave,

For you, send an email to sup...@gaiagps.com and we'll add Gaia Green to your account for free.

It's possible that we'll move custom waypoint icons into the main product, but we don't have plans to right now. We actually did just migrate datum-shifting into the main product.

We are giving Gaia Green a lot of thought, and exactly what it should do. We obviously want to encourage people to subscribe, but at the same time we don't want it to be perceived as a necessary thing. Gaia Green is just a few features, and the main app is years of work.

We have considered making Gaia Green just have features that have periodic costs to us - like the ability to sync high-res photos over GaiaCloud, or to do layered map downloads. I think people are a little put off that we have any non-periodic-cost features included in a subscription product, or at least there is confusion about whether you need to have Green for Gaia to be a great app.

We'll also probably change the name. We're not so in love with Gaia Green anymore, but still don't really like the standard "Pro" moniker.

Regards,
Andrew

Andrew,

I had looked at Green, but really only interested in custom waypoint icons at this stage. Any thought of migrating waypoint icons back into the main product?

Thanks,

Dave
