Hey folks,

Now that we have aerials available from a few sources, we are thinking about removing the Google source all together. What do you think about that? The reason we'd do this is because we often get requests to do all of our map functions on that source, and that would require a lot of work, which we aren't going to do.

We may consider grandfathering it out of the app too - leave it in for current userss, but deprecate it for people who've never seen it. We fear an outcry if we remove it, but we think people won't miss it if they never had it in the app (since there are other aerials).

Any comments would be appreciated!

Regards,
Andrew

I won't miss it.  In offline mode I can't get it anyway, and in online mode I can get it from the iPad maps app.

That sounds like a good compromize to me. I do use it from time to time to look up visual details in the landscape when planning a hike (it is still sharper than the other aerial sources available).

However, if you eventually chose to fully do away with it, I promise I won't complain.

I finally got around to comparing the Google imagery with the MapQuest
and CalTopo. Where my house sits northeast of Durango, CO Google is by
far the best. It shows my house (built in 2006) and I can even see my
truck parked in front. That said, I doubt I'd use any of the aerial
stuff. For my primary use of Gaia GPS I will be using topos. I would
not miss Google if it goes away.

Oof, one thing I forgot is the international users, for whom the USGS NAIPs provide no coverage. I think we'll leave it in there for now, though put it below the CalTopo aerials.

Hey folks,

If anyone ever wants to drop from this group (or change to an email digest or other settings), you can change your settings at: http://groups.google.com/group/gaia-gps

I don't mind doing it, and I took care of Damien of course.

We chose a Google Group instead of a mailing list so people could have control over the emails they receive, and so the discussion could be public.

Andrew

I would vote for keeping the  Google imagery, at least for a few months so your users can fully evaluate the benefits of the newer imagery.

I vote keep it. I can't seem to get the zoom levels that I can get on
googles elsewhere. I very often switch between topo and aerial to see
if an ancient trail is still there, or to see if it is overgrown etc.
Maybe a compromise, a small popup disclaimer in the corner of googles
saying that mapping functions are not available on these maps.

Also, have you looked into using microsofts maps? Bing? I think they
are significantly better than googles, at least sharper where I live.

I love this app, it has gotten me to some of the coolest places I have
found.

Thank you for your hard work,

Matt

I think we're going to keep Google gor the international users, for now at least.

I did look into Bing, but they are asking a minimum of 10K/year for their tiles. Given the aerial sources that are available for free, it's hard to justify that expense.
