Hey folks,

I wanted to let you know that we have an aerial server up and running, and it is mostly complete for the continental US. Currently, you can add the source (CalTopo Aerial) from Settings->Help->Add Topo Sources.

There are other adhoc aerial sources available as well, but for this one, we have an agreement with CalTopo, and we can be confident that it will be available, and we can make improvements to it as well.

Other Notes:
  • In v6.4, this source will be a default source, and we are likely going to remove the Google satellite source, since it can't be downloaded or used with our tracking code.
  • To my eye at least, these aerials have much better contrast than the ESRI source.
  • I also linked the MapQuest aerial and OSM sources in Settings->Help. The OSM source is very pretty.

Please let us know if you have any comments or questions - if you see any odd artifacts in the maps, please let us know the coordinates.

Regards,
Andrew

This looks pretty good. It doesn't approach the level of detail on
Google Maps,
so I'll have to see if it's good enough to work for me in the field,
but it's
way better than nothing.

I found a blank space on the map at 38.432167, -110.456349

Yeah, probably still are a couple of blank quads.

We could cache it out to more detail I think, but then it quadruples our storage costs, and it gets kind of nuts.

I linked to the CalTopoAerial, and it appears to stop at the California border.

Any Canadian sources for Aerial?

What I tend to use the aerial photos for mostly is determining where
old mining roads go, as often they are easier to see in the photos
than on the ground (even when I'm on one!). Unfortunately these
single-track roads are just a bit too fuzzy at the current resolution
to make out clearly in many circumstances. Yes, at least twice the
resolution at 4x the cost would be needed. I'd gladly pay extra to
get resolution equal to what Google Earth provides.

Mark,

It looks like the ESRI aerial in Settings->Help->Add Topo Sources covers Canada. I don't know if we'll be adding Canada aerials to our server anytime soon - it would increase the expense a great deal.

Regarding Morrie's comment on higher res aerials - it's running us around 500/month to store the US aerials right now. I think if we went down 1 more zoom, it would be more like 2000, and one more level after that, and it's more like 8000. The amount it costs Google to run a worldwide server down to 18 is mind-boggling - I'd guess six figures a month just to store the data, and then a lot more to serve it.

I think what you see is what you get for now, but maybe down the road :)

How do I add a map source on Android?

Working on that.

Overzoom too actually, we had a breakthrough there.

At N30.74679, W86.99886 the CalTopo Aerials are at least 5 years old.
Since I am working with recent clear-cuts, it doesn't work for my
needs. BTW, Google aerials in this area were updated about 3 months
ago.

Consider letting end users create and register their own background
maps like MakkaMappa and Maprika; GAIA is superior to those two in
every way but backgrounds.

Just used warper.gaiagps.com
Not good, the OpenStreetMap background has too little detail to
register points accurately. Also the uploaded image for the map gets
so degraded in the process, that the resulting map it is unusable.

I am still a newbie, but how do we go about actually downloading aerial maps for offline use?

Thanks,

Jason

OK. I get it. You can't download google maps. Which aerial options give us the clearest images. The Caltopo maps seemed a bit fuzzy. Also, when downloading maps for a track where do we find the zoom options? When selecting and downloading maps when browsing we get the little slider to adjust the zoom level. If choosing a zoom level when downloading from a track is not an option what is the default zoom level?

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason,

When you choose to download maps along a track, the default zoom level is 15 or 1:24000.   We are sorry that you find CalTopo maps to be a bit fuzzy, we are always trying to improve our map sources to ensure that they are reliable and quality map sources for our users.  Thank you for your feedback and we will keep trying to improve our aerial imagery.  Please let me know if you have any other questions, comments, or concerns.

Savannah

Hey Fitz,

Thanks for your feedback, and I'm sorry the warper didn't work for you. It's a work in progress.

I will pass your feedback on to the developer though!

Regards,
Andrew
