If I download maps to my iphone can I then later move the maps back
and forth between my iphone and my pc using one of the windows/iphone
file managers? I would think this capability would be determined by
whether or not the map files are somehow hidden from the file manager
and only accessible by gaigps.

Reason I am asking, I am using a phone with only 16G memory so I can
see that I may want to move maps back and forth between iphone and pc
without having to access the network. Also I could backup my favorite
map downloads that way.

tks
Don

Hi Don,

Unfortunately, we do not currently have a way for you to access your saved maps on a Windows computer.  Those files are only accessible to Gaia GPS, and will not appear when you open your iPhone in a Windows file manager.  However, I see how this could be a very helpful for users who want to save and access their maps somewhere other than their phones.

In fact, we are currently working on a Mac app for users to access their maps on their Apple computers.  I think your idea to include a similar feature for Windows users is a good idea, and I would like to see what other users think of this idea as well.  Would you please put your idea on our UserVoice page?  If you post your idea on our UserVoice page, other users can comment on it and vote for it.  Then if we decide to develop the feature or eventually release a version of our app with the feature, we can let you know via your UserVoice post.

Again, I am sorry that we do not currently have this feature, but please put the idea on our UserVoice page so that we can see if other users are interested in this feature as well.  Also, please let me know if you have any other questions, comments, or concerns about Gaia GPS.

Best regards,
Savannah

I should have provided more background on this. I was not suggesting
using Windows Explorer to view those files but a special file browser
for iphones called iphonebrowser http://code.google.com/p/iphonebrowser/.
That browser allows one to view files on the iphone that Itunes
cannot see.

If the answer is still no, that tool cannot see them either, then my
next question would be, does this same limitation apply to the Android
platform?

I will still post my request in your wish list, I was just curious to
know if this is more of an Iphone file management limitation or if it
is inherent in the gaigps implementation? Obviously, there is a
file somewhere at the beginning but it could be that it gets
internalized by gaigps and loses its identity as a file whether its
Iphone or Android and maybe its an IP rights management issue.

Can you give me a rough idea how big these map files are? Just pick
any topo region you have and tell me the size. Depending on that
answer it may not really be a good request.

tks
Don

The map files are not visible to iTunes, though if you're using
another type of file browser you may be able to see them. The app
isn't designed to have the map files managed externally though, it
will detect if maps it thinks are downloaded are missing and start
downloading them again. It would also be difficult to move specific
maps on and off the device, as the files are indexed geographically,
not organized by map.

The maps are downloaded as a lot of tiny individual tiles, so maps
could be anywhere from a few hundred KB to hundreds of MB. For
instance, downloading topo maps of the state of Washington to our
highest zoom level would be about 7GB. In practice, people download
smaller areas that they are going to visit, and maybe a larger area to
a lower zoom level.

thanks Anna,

In the meantime I thought of a possible workaround to achieve the same
thing.
I assume that whenever Gaigps is backed up that the maps attached at
that time
are backed up as well. So....you could create several of backups each
with a unique
set up maps.

For example I could have a gaigps_CA backup, a gaigps_WA, and a
gaipgs_TX backup. I am assuming that there is a backup scheme on
Iphone for backing things up although being a new Iphone user I don't
really know. At the moment my USB cable is broken so I won't be able
to check out this idea until my replacement comes in.

I know I'm going against the flow here, but I'm trying to get my GPS
where I am not dependent on the WEB but just dependent on getting
things I want the first time off the web. ie then get off the grid
when I want to and still make adjustments.

Hi Don,

That's a good idea and luckily there is a back up system for your iPhone in iTunes.  Please let us know if you are able to back up collections of saved maps using iPhone back ups, because that may be helpful for our other users.

Best regards,
Savannah
