I just saw a cadence magnet that is supposed to magnetically attach to the pedal spindle - thus eliminating a zip tie and adhesive on the crank arm, that the standard ones Garmin uses.

Has anyone used one?  I was wondering about rough roads.  Seems like it should work.

Thanks,

Andy

You can get tiny 2mm rare earth magnets cheaply (example:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-Disc-Neodymium-10x2mm-Strong-Rare-Earth-N42-Magnets-For-Warhammer-Craft-Model-/261122866223?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ccc22bc2f)
and just glue them on. I've JB welded these to spokes and they have
stayed put for years.

Neither aluminum nor carbon are ferromagnetic...but for steel cranks should work.

Will the magnet stick to the rear derailleur barrel adjuster?

I use a big stack of neodymium magnets on my pedal spindle.  They've never given me any problems.  I got them either at Rockler or Woodcraft, both of which are in the Tri County area.

I found one on ebay when I got my Garmin, it works great. I have about a 12mm gap with no issues yet. Only had it maybe a month now but its held up with all the nasty weather over the last couple of weeks. I think without some sort of direct contact its not coming off. Also keeps any dirt out of the hex head on the pedal.

Andy I have one as you described in your first message and it works great. It is super strong. If you order some I'd ate a couple.

I ordered some that are pretty expensive :)

38 cents apiece is perfect if it works :)  I will report back once I get them (coming from over seas so it may be December :)

Those are the ones I've used. JB welded to a spoke, and been on there
for years. I think the spoke would break if I tried to pull 'em off..
I think I paid less than Andy though. Spent the difference on beer.

OK,

Here is what I ordered

They are less than a buck apiece and they are perfect.  It does not have to be all that close to the cadence sensor either.  Worked easily with my Garmin sensor.  I also found out that I did not have a wheel magnet on the set of wheels I am running right now.

This magnet is definitely the way to go.  Dump those damned magnets that get zip tied to the crank arm and collect all kinds of crap in there.  Stick this bad boy on the pedal spindle and be done with it.

The smaller ones that Fraser mentioned would be perfect for the wheel magnet as well.
