I've got it in my calendar still and plan on coming.

But my daughter is sick (nasty stomach flu) and taking awhile to get
better, so there is a chance I won't show up...

Damn, I was so close to making it to this one! Some travel
complications have come up that won't let me go. :-(

Ryan, sorry you couldn't make it. Hope the complications were not serious.
Oh, and how did you and your wife do in the Sun Run?

The complications were more to do with difficulty in procuring the car
while my wife is heading out of town, and I was way too tired to
figure out a solution.

We did pretty good on the Sun Run. She managed to run it non-stop and
did it in the 1:15 range. I had to take a short walk break at around
7km because my knee was bugging me, but managed to finish under 1:30.
According to the placing in the paper, she was just before 50% and I
was just after 50%. We made the mistake of starting at the back and
had to run through walking people the entire 10k.. won't be making
that mistake again!

A few weeks ago I picked up a pair of FiveFingers
(http://vibramfivefingers.com/products/products_KSO_m.cfm) and I've
been learning to run in them. There's about a month long adjustment
period before your feet are strong enough to support themselves, but
it's going great so far. I'm hoping to do the Sun Run in them next
year, and hopefully in under an hour.

Interesting you bring that up. Yesterday morning on CBC I was listening to a talkshow about exactly that, running barefoot, and how it's so much better then all the designer runners etc that cause so many injuries. The trick is to know how to run and not have good shoes.

The FiveFingers look pretty neat... basically just protection against rocks and thorns? What did they cost?

I don't run much, and don't know how to run properly, but still find it interesting.

Damn, I missed it! Someone posted on a barefoot board that there would
be a segment on it on CBC...

They were about ~$80 from Mountain Equipment Co-op. Actually a little
cheaper than listed on the Vibram site.

And yes, they are pretty much protection from sharp objects. There's
no padding at all, and you still feel all the fine textures of what
you're walking on. Stepping on a pea sized pebble still isn't fun.

I've seen too much broken glass on the streets and sidewalks to go
completely bare. My intention was to use the fivefingers as a
transition, but I still haven't found anywhere that I would trust
enough to go completely barefoot.
