I have been chatting with John Eyles about donating the unspent funds that people chipped in for FLNW2 to the EON foundation (http://e-o-n.org/) EON is very happy to accept the money.

From John: "It will go to the community learning centre for 12 villages in Laos, near Luang Prabang along the Mekong. The communities have been visited by a number of international school students from Hong Kong who have helped with building projects from local materials. These communities are about 100 in a valley without electricity or cell phone coverage yet"

So all that needs to happen now is for me to transfer the money. John - do you have a Paypal account? If so send me details off list and I'll put it through. If no Paypal account let me know the best way for me to transfer the money. OK?

- Michael.

Thank you again. EON is delighted to accept the unspent funds of $250

I have been speaking with Graham Harper who represents EON Indochina about how this money can be put to meaningful use in the Mekong with a tangible outcome that can be seen and shared by FLNW particpants - rather than becoming invisible in larger project work. We have decided that the money will be used by EON to sponsor a Big Brother Mouse book party for the children in the remote village communities near the Mekong river in Laos that Graham is involved in project work.

These communities have no electricity, cell phone coverage or other IT communications. Their needs are basic. One of the first steps is reading literacy in the local language - however there are no reading books, indeed very few text books exist at all in Lao. A Big Brother Mouse Book party will involve the donation of sets of Lao children's reading books into the local school (about 200 books), with each child being given a book to read and return. A party will be held when the books are delivered to the school and a day spent reading and enjoying with teachers and volunteers. Most of the books are just in Lao language, some in Lao and English. You can read an article about Big Brother Mouse here: http://www.north-by-north-east.com/articles/08_07_2.asp

Graham is suggesting that the party be held in the second week of March. He will record the event and share in image and text with FLNW. He will set up a PayPal account to receive the funds.

Cheers,

John

Thanks for this info John. Perhaps you can get Graham to email me with the Paypal account details once he's set it up?

- Michael

Funky name for a party hey ? :)

If I lived in a valley without electricity or water nor cell phone
coverage then a book as a child would be like gold.....as will our
ability to realise this dream for those who would appreciate some
resources....while we whing about access costs from our notebooks
flying around on planes and hiking from hotel room to hotel room.

Good call John. I look forward to some 'vision' of whats occuring with
Graham who by the way sounds like a great guy....take it away.
