Sorry if this has been noted already and I've missed it. Over on
alt.binaries.nospam.toons, some joker by name of Raven has posted a flood
of artwork, much of which is readily recognizable as belonging to members
of this group. I've specifically noted art by Doug Winger and Seraph, and
I'm sure there are others.

Sometimes I'm almost tempted to post my artwork in FAM. Almost. Then I
remember why I don't.

I don't know whether Raven was so much stealing as much as he was just
unaware that redistribution is a complete and total no-no. Several people
have replied as such, although Raven himself and the other one, "Former
Assassin," have yet to respond.

I'm afraid I don't see any peices by myself or anyone else I know in that
flood.

I went over to that newsgroup and from what I can see, almost every pic
posted there is of copy-righted characters.

I'm sure we've had the "re-post of art featuring characters the artist
doesn't own" discussion before though.

Just for the record - you can't copyright a character. A copyright
applies to a specific work in a fixed medium (a drawing, a sculpture)
or, in certain cases, an ephemeral work such as a play, not to a
concept, and a character is a concept not a specific work.

A character can, in a limited sense, be *trademarked*.

What was posted (I assume, since I've not bothered to check), are
copyrighted works, not copyrighted characters. Moreover, since pretty
much all creative works in a fixed medium are inherently copyrighted
(unless the author explicitly puts the work in public domain), even
that's a bit redundant.

And before you ask - the reason it can seem like a character (say Mickey
Mouse) is copyrighted is because the copyright law doesn't simply limit
(but not prohibit) the precise replication of a work - it also restricts
the derivation of works *from* a given work or collection of works. So
if you draw Mickey Mouse, the odds are you're going to draw something
pretty similar to something the Disney Co has already drawn, and that's
illegal (mostly - there are exceptions - contrary to what a lot of
artists here think, copyrights are not absolute nor are they universal..)

Cheers,
TW!

Weird... your style, your signature, or so I thought.
Bacoon_YoteSketch.gif? I am unquestionably fallible.

If that drawing is in the newsgroup, it's not among the images in Raven's
flood.

You must have missed it, because I saw it in there.

Note that Raven is doing a multi day flood, (got one thing tight
at least), so you just might have looked at the wrong day's worth.
