I want to throw in a vocal "me too!" for this suggestion. I currently
have python 2.6 and 3.something running on several systems with this
configuration and, thus far, none of my 2.x or 3.x code has broken.
It may be that for the "many years" it takes the move to 3.x we keep
this and phase it out towards the end of the transition period to

That is my opinion too - I don't see why compatibility layers weren't
added to python-3.x.
But now we just need to deal with it.

(Disclaimer: I am not a Funtoo user, but I use keychain and other
tools produced by Funtoo.)

I think we are on the same line, just the suggested solution was
different. My solution would be to keep #!/usr/bin/python point to
python2 by default (and not bother renaming it to python2 as it seems
less work).
A programmer/maintainer can override the use of python2 by placing #!/
usr/bin/python3 in the script as upgrading a script to python3 is not

with "git checkout" or something.

The problem is that python 3 breaks compatibility with python 2.x. So what I am suggesting doesn't break anything, *python itself* (in version 3.x) intentionally breaks compatibility with 2.x. I am just suggesting how to deal with this.
In current Gentoo and Funtoo, "python" can point to 2.x *or* 3.x, so "#!/usr/bin/env python" may point the script to a version of python that it is incompatible with.

I'm not sure I fully understand what you intend to do, but having to
change #! /usr/bin/env/ python to #! /usr/bin/env/ python2 breaks
every entry example in a basic python textbook. Is that really a smart
thing to do? (even starting python programmers are still recommended
to work with 2.6)
Note that as far as I know an install of python3 should have a symlink

If this is the exact command that you typed then it is very likely
that this where it went wrong. To extract the stage tarbal you need to
use tar xvjpf stage3-*.tar.bz2. The additional option is the p, which
is needed to preserve the permissions on the file.
Note that for extract the portage tarball you also have to make sure

I will tell you that I did,
I changed date per UTC, then I start the wireless, and I worked with
Xfce and I downloaded with firefox the tarball and portage of funtoo
(i download "current") when I extracted tarball there wasn't a problem
all is good but my problems start when I try to extract the portage

the "root" issue is that the ebuilds seds the wrong file. Why sed is
used at all I really don't know :) Patch below:

after upgrading (few days ago) to sys-apps/openrc-0.6.0, while I
rebooted my computer I see the version shown when openrc starts is erroneus.
This patch fixes it. Must be applied to openrc-funtoo-2009.11.27.tar.b z2
