Hi,

I may be doing something wrong but the portage tree is enormous. Excluding
distfiles, metadata and packages it's ~750MB. 350MB of that is in .git.

Is there anyway to reduce the size? Does the non-dev really need all of the
git history?

Regard

Reg

Hi, you can try git gc --aggressive within /usr/portage, it will
shrink about 100 MB of data.Mine portage is around 1 GB also same
situation with other .git repo's,for example, I have live kernel git
repo which is almost 1 GB too. Daniel is working on reducing a portage
tree size.

Mine is on a partition and it is formatted:
mke2fs -b 1024 -N 200000 /dev/....
.git size 312 Mb

/usr/portage/distfiles is on a partition as well, so that helps

some suggestions have been

git repack -a -d -l
git clean -Xf
git clone --depth 1 ------not sure about how safe that is, so maybe
worth waiting for confirmation on this.
and oleg's suggestion.

Oops, I mean and there is oleg's suggestion also, I didn't mean oleg's
suggestion needs confirmation, I'm uncertain only about the git -clone
one.

Cheers, I tried that on my desktop and knocked off ~90MB. I didn't dare to use
"--aggressive" on my P2 server. It's been going ages now and kicking out a
lot of heat.
