There is an interesting thread on the 'gnu-system-discuss' mailing list about creating a GNU distribution. I am an happy Funtoo user, but my feeling is that Funtoo is the best candidate for such a project; there is a discussion regarding some important choices... Funtoo could become part of the GNU project, this imply among other things to replace the Linux kernel by Linux-libre, which became a GNU package (and creating another branch for the Hurd?). Nobody asked for that, I am just dreaming to initiate a dialogue between Daniel and RMS, it's why I cross-posted this idea on their mailing list, this could be so wonderful if Daniel could share his thought there...

I would, as a prima facie response say that I am strongly against working with RMS based on past experiences. Andrew

I haven't looked at the discussion, but it strikes me as curious, as the FSF already has a sponsored distribution:

For this point, maybe there is an opportunity to forget the past by living today a more positive experience ? I can't talk for rms, but my guess is that a dialogue is worth a try. There is so many projects within GNU that can learn each others, including from the GCC or GDB maintainers. They meet themselves sometimes on GNU hackers meetings. @Martin : this years GHM seems organized in Germany by Werner Koch, and was planned at some time in an hotel named "Linux" if I understood correctly :)
