Just a heads up on something interesting: http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=2844

It’s a complete Open Street Map dump as an Amazon EBS PostGIS DB, meaning you can start an EC2 instance with PostGIS, mount this AWS public data EBS, run pg_createcluster, and away you go just like Google!

Well maybe you have to start up several dozen instances and seed a 1-20 zoom level tile pyramid first, but the point is you personally could have a global high quality map resource rivaling Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Reminds me of the heady days when a personal computer came in a kit, still some soldering to do but you get the idea.

Interesting. I wonder how often they (whoever created this AWS
dataset) plan on syncing it with the master OSM database. Hopefully
they plan on weekly or more frequent updates, otherwise it won't be
particularly useful since OSM data changes so rapidly.

Yes there is a bit of discussion on the topic here:

Don't know if a regular update will actually transpire. It has only been
available since 10/9/2009

Still it beats decennial TIGER updates by years and USGS DLG by decades :)
