August is by far now the most violent month in the history of the city
of Juarez. A total of 15 people were killed in mostly separate
incidents yesterday bringing the total number for the month to 336.
[The previous monthly record was 313 in June 2010.] The number of
murders just in the month of august 2010 surpasses any previous ANNUAL
total before 2008. Diario reports the annual number of homicides from
2007 as 320. The annual figure now for 2010 as of August 31 is 2,029.
The number of female homicides in the month of August also set a
record with 40 victims. So far this year, an average of 8 people have
been killed in Juarez per day, or one homicide every 3 hours on
average.
The El Universal total for the country of Mexico this year is reported
to be 7,638...more than one-fourth of the homicides in the country of

En el recién concluido mes de agosto nuevamente se rompió el récord
histórico mensual de homicidios dolosos en esta frontera con 336
víctimas, según arroja un seguimiento periodístico.
Este número es superior a las cifras de junio que registró 313
víctimas. Además rebasó, y por mucho, las cantidades totales de
asesinatos en 1999, 2004 y 2005, cuando sumaron 176, 202 y 207,
respectivamente.
Esta es la primera vez en la historia de la ciudad y el Valle de
Juárez que se supera la cifra de 320 homicidios en un mes.
El primer récord histórico mensual y anual de homicidios dolosos que
se impuso fue en 1995, cuando fueron victimadas 34 personas en agosto
y 294 en todo el año.
Esta marca permaneció vigente hasta el 2007, cuando hubo 38 asesinatos
en diciembre y 320 en el año.
Pero esa cifra impuesta no duró mucho tiempo, ya que de enero a agosto
del 2008 sucedieron 911 asesinatos; además marzo, mayo, junio y julio
registraron más de 100 crímenes dolosos cada uno, lo que nunca antes
había sucedido en esta frontera.

1999.

Las cifras dadas en su tiempo por la Subprocuraduría General de
Justicia, a través de las averiguaciones previas iniciadas y agrupadas
por delitos principales, indican que en el 2004 hubo 202 víctimas de
asesinato, 207 en el 2005, 253 en el 2006, 320 en el 2007, 1,623 en el
2008, 2,754 en el 2009 y 2 mil 29 en el 2010.
Los números revelan que en los primeros ocho meses del 2009 fueron
cometidos mil 496 homicidios, lo que representa un aumento de 36 por
ciento comparativamente al mismo periodo de año en curso.
Esto significa, además, que de enero a agosto del 2010 fueron
cometidos un promedio de ocho asesinatos al día.
Es decir, en esta frontera ocurrió un homicidio doloso cada tres horas

Los casos

I am not sure why the EPTimes reports the August murder toll as 322
when Diario this morning reported 336. I think the discrepancy comes
from the fact that Diario maintains their own tally and compares it
with the reports they receive from the Procuraduria. Reporters have
told me that they get different numbers depending upon who they talk
to in the state office on a given day. In any case, the number of
people murdered in August is the highest ever recorded for a single
month in Juarez. The numbers for the previous months in 2010 as of
the last official report in Diario are:
January 227; February 163; March 240; April 205; May 262; June 313;
July 291; August 336.

In murderous Juárez, August was especially deadly.
The summer month had more homicides than any other month since drug
cartels began fighting a turf war in 2008.
As of Tuesday night, 322 people had been murdered in August. Before
this month, the deadliest had been June, when 313 people were slain,
and August 2009, with 315.
"It has been a violent month," said Carlos González, spokesman for the
Chihuahua state attorney general's office. "The statistics
unfortunately reflect it."
On Tuesday, gunmen attacked a family party about 3 p.m. and killed
four people, three of whom were siblings.
Chihuahua state police reported that the four killed were Jesús Juárez
López, 36; Leticia Corral Nevares, 17; Julio Corral Nevares, between
25 and 30; and Arturo Corral Nevares, between 27 and 30.
González said more than 90 percent of the city's homicides are related
to drugs.
The statistics, however, never show whether victims were bystanders.
Details surrounding murders are almost always unclear because almost
all cases go unresolved.

Thousands of soldiers were deployed to Juárez beginning in March 2008.
The military force grew to 7,000 soldiers afterward. They patrolled
the city and responded to murder scenes, but the federal government
said it was a temporary measure.
Calderón visited Juárez three times this year to launch a social plan
with 160 promises, including public safety, education and the economy.
Because of the presidential visits, Juárez residents formed committees
to help solve the crisis of violence.
Members of the public-safety committee have said that local, state and
federal law enforcement have abused human rights. Chihuahua state
representative Victor Quintana Silveyra accused the military of many
of the human-rights violations earlier this year.
The government then turned to its federal police force to patrol the
city.
In April, thousands of federal agents arrived in the border city,
increasing the corps to 4,500 officers.
Since then, they have become the targets of many ambushes.
Nationwide, federal police have fired 3,200 agents, almost 10 percent
of its force, this year in a housecleaning effort to root out
corruption.
About 1,000 agents faced disciplinary sanctions.
Facing corruption charges are 465 officers, including four commanders
in Juárez whose firings were prompted earlier in August by a federal
police protest.
José Ramón Salinas, spokes man for the Mexican federal police, said
the agency rotates agents every two months to other cities to prevent
corruption within the force.

when Diario this morning reported 336. I think the discrepancy comes
from the fact that Diario maintains their own tally and compares it
with the reports they receive from the Procuraduria. Reporters have
told me that they get different numbers depending upon who they talk
to in the state office on a given day. In any case, the number of
people murdered in August is the highest ever recorded for a single
month in Juarez. The numbers for the previous months in 2010 as of
the last official report in Diario are:
January 227; February 163; March 240; April 205; May 262; June 313;
July 291; August 336.

Juárez violence persists: August deadliest month with 322 killed

In murderous Juárez, August was especially deadly.
The summer month had more homicides than any other month since drug
cartels began fighting a turf war in 2008.
As of Tuesday night, 322 people had been murdered in August. Before
this month, the deadliest had been June, when 313 people were slain,
and August 2009, with 315.
"It has been a violent month," said Carlos González, spokesman for the
Chihuahua state attorney general's office. "The statistics
unfortunately reflect it."
On Tuesday, gunmen attacked a family party about 3 p.m. and killed
four people, three of whom were siblings.
Chihuahua state police reported that the four killed were Jesús Juárez
López, 36; Leticia Corral Nevares, 17; Julio Corral Nevares, between
25 and 30; and Arturo Corral Nevares, between 27 and 30.
González said more than 90 percent of the city's homicides are related
to drugs.
The statistics, however, never show whether victims were bystanders.
Details surrounding murders are almost always unclear because almost
all cases go unresolved.
