I just heard from email that my son arrived at the Monastery. It was
a whirlwind getting all the affairs in order. I was so worried that
he would OD before he even got to the plane. I really think he shot
up at the airport before he left. I asked him if he had his subutex
with him, because he was probably going to be in withdrawals on the
plane!!! He just looks at me, like how did I know? I know he went out
to say goodbye to all his "friends" before he left and he was pretty
high for days. I'm sure more than a few try to get that last party in
before checking in. He had been living here with me and this old
house is empty today, but I do feel calmer. It is not bearable at all
to live with an IV user, especially as a mom. 22 days at Thamkrabok
and a month at New Life. I hope he finally finds some peace.

Hi Linda,

He is in good hands now... the rest will be up to him.

It must be quite disconcerting not having his 'energy' around your home just now but maybe now you can take some time-out just for yourself.

My teacher and mentor (John Peacocke) has translated an 18th century Sri Lankan text on 'Equanimity' as follows:

This life is but a play of joy and sorrow
may we remain undisturbed by life's rise and fall.
I care deeply about you,
but you are the owner of your actions and their fruit,
and sadly I can not keep you from distress.

You can rest assured that there is nothing more you can do for now.

Best wishes and kind regards.

With Metta,

Vince

Vince, that was an excellant quote, thank you, I'm going to have it printed, in English and Thai and post it on my kuti.

Dear Linda (and Phra Ajahn Bill),

Now that your son has begun his 'Journey of the Hero' at Thamkrabok another verse translated by John Peacocke comes to mind -

The following verse is from an 18th century Sri Lankan Buddhist text on joy/gladness (Muditta):

“How wonderful you are in your being
I delight that you are here,
I take joy in your good fortune.
May your happiness continue.”

I'll make sure to visit as soon as I get to Thamkrabok next week.

Metta to all,

Vince

It warms my heart to see a mother so actively exercising compassion for her ailing son. .  . . as a twenty nine year old man struggling with relations to my mother.  please do all you can to keep faith in your son his process and that which you share.  i send my blessing to you and
your son

Thank you all for your kind words. He actually emailed from the
monastery and it sounded like he was doing well. His spirits seemed
good. He seems to have the common complaint of not being able to sleep
and he said he thought of leaving many times. So many people turned
away from me for taking my addicted son in my home, but it was never a
question for me. Why do people treat addicts so terrible? They are
humans also. I read this early on in his addiction, "Allow your addict
to heal with dignity". I live by this thought daily. Andrew, your
mother loves you no matter what. I bet she is just so scared for you
and your future. I know that unless my son gets well, I will continue
to hurt and believe me it is a pain no one should have to endure. I
just pray that he finds his soul again, because heroin has robbed him
of his life. Whatever your problems, love heals everything and I wish
you the best Andrew.
