Dear ARCE-PA members,
This month ARCE-PA is very proud to present:
"Medieval Egyptian Views
of the Pharaonic Past"
Dr. Everett Rowson
New York University
Friday, February 15, 2008
6:30 PM
Classroom 2
University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
3260 South Street, Philadelphia, PA
$5 general admission, $3 Penn Museum members/students, FREE to ARCE-PA members.
About the event:
Medieval Egyptians were deeply divided over what to make of
their
cultural heritage. On the one hand, they could pride themselves on the
antiquity of their civilization, whose extraordinary monuments were all
around them. On the other, "Pharaoh" in the Qur'an and the
Islamic
religious tradition was a haughty autocrat and staunch opponent of
monotheism. This talk will address this conflict, touching on such
issues as the medieval understanding--and treatment--of pyramids and
temples, as well as the larger question of a specifically Egyptian sense
of identity within the medieval Islamic world and the role of the
Pharaonic heritage in forging such an identity.
Our speaker:
Everett Rowson, a former president of ARCE (2002-4), is
Associate
Professor of Islamic Studies at New
York University.
He holds a Ph.D.
from Yale, and taught at Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania
before moving to NYU in 2003. He has published widely on medieval
Islamic intellectual and social history, and has a particular
fascination with the city of Cairo,
where he has spent a total of about
five years, including two years on ARCE research fellowships.
We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Pluta
