This is relayed from Michael Burmeister-Brown at Open-Mesh who I spoke
with an hour ago. He asked me to pass this on. It was a secret and
now it isn't.

Open-Mesh.com is a new site that will be going live in the next couple
of days. It is being introduced at a big conference in Paris, France
next week.

It supports Meraki (as NetEquality has done) and RO.B.IN based
networks. Meraki support is via their public API, RO.B.IN support is
direct to our backend. We want to support both open-source and
commercial solutions, as long as Meraki keeps the public API open.

RO.B.IN supports NoDogSplash, a simpler version of WiFiDog. FYI,
There is support for Sputnik in RO.B.IN, but it is Sputnik that would
be writing their own agent - it doesn't ship with Sputnik.

We (Open-Mesh, not NetEquality) will be selling Accton MR3201 routers
in January. Pricing isn't yet set, but it will be competitive (we are
thinking of a 3 router "mesh pack" at $129 or so). They will come pre-
flashed with RO.B.IN and work with our back-end. This includes full
splash page control (and a wysiwyg/HTML editor), full control over the
SSID, bandwidth control, etc. The routers come in plain white boxes
and have no logos on the plastic housing as we want to support people
doing their own brands. You can put a sticker on the routers, drop in
your own user guide, sticker or sleeve the box, and you have your own
product.

To see the back-end status now, visit http://www.open-mesh.com/index3.php.
Create an account and look at the "edit network" page. We will also
co-brand this site if you want have your own logo'd management site
without having to create and flash custom firmware, figure out
hosting, etc. I am working on adding the last few features and bug-
fixes now.

So... Open-Mesh will have a complete plug & play solution including
zero-config mesh firmware, preflashed routers, and free management
without limitations. It was completely built from open source code so
anyone can do their own and create their own dashboard servers as
well.

You can flash a FON now for testing. See the instructions on the
above page.
You'll be able to reflash Meraki's as well using a Windows based
program that will communicate and upload the new image through the
Meraki Ethernet port - no special equipment required (at least until
Meraki makes it impossible to do so - which might happen in reaction
to all of this).

Does Meraki know about all of this? Yes - and they aren't happy about
it.

Mike wanted to make it very clear to me that they are not doing any of
this to spite Meraki or to hurt them in any way. They love Meraki and
the Meraki product and will continue to use Meraki where appropriate.
This entire effort was a result of the open mesh community's
frustration with Meraki's view of the open source mesh community and
the world. This is not Open-Mesh.com's sole effort - this is the
result of many helping hands from around the globe. It simply came
together at this site first. Many other projects are also working on
this. It's open and the choice is yours - finally!

Hello everyone,

I was just speaking with Michael Burmeister-Brown and he said that the
next feature being added to the Status Page was a list of users and
their usage stats.
He also said that new updates to the Robin Flash will be quick
incremental ones instead of having to reflash the entire unit. So
upgrades will be online, invisible and quick.

Further technical details.
The Gateways report stats every 5 minutes and although all Robin units
report back individually to the server at the moment - future releases
will collect all stats for a network at the gateway and report only
the summary data from the gateways to the report server every 5
minutes with a single information package. This method of reporting
stats will make the load a lot less on the servers collecting the
information.Soon, there will be an option that will let you add a
second reporting server of your choosing to the configuration
screen. This should help alleviate some of the fears of another
proprietary play coming forward. Michael has assured me that a
proprietary play would never be the case as a result of this Open
Source effort.

Hello

I'm very happy that we now have a platform that is free and open, and I think I can say that on behalf of everyone at FreeTheNet, we appreciate the efforts of Michael and everyone at Open-Mesh.com, as well as Antonio who is the main developer on ROBIN.  (And who has posted on this list previously, awesome!!!)  I did talk to Michael on the phone last night about the effort, and the history behind it and I agree with their position and the goals of this platform.  As for what this means for the "Merhaki" project, it means that our efforts will go where they always have been, which is integration of the WifiDog Captive Portal into the ROBIN firmware.  The reason for this is because it gives us the ability to collect per-user statistics, and more granular control over who accesses the node.  The great thing about Mike's solution is that we can reflash it, and try to relieve some of the stress that we expect that server will go through, since I do expect this firmware to be very successful.

At the next meeting, I would like some of the Beta Testers of the firmware to stick around, and we can write up a HOW-TO for testing the ROBIN firmware, and the compiled ROBIN+WifiDog derivative that we are using.  Also, since the focus of our development efforts have changed, I would encourage anyone who is familiar with Ruby on Rails to help with the DogOnRails project and those who are up for it to help with merging all the enhancements that were made in the branches of WifiDog (NoDogSplash, Public IP's WifiDog Fork) into our version of WifiDog so that we can patch it and get features such as enhanced bandwidth throttling into WifiDog.

w00t!  Open Source FTW!

This is fantastic news. (strapping on tinfoil hat) Google seems to be
already on to us and not happy about it, if the sponsoring ads for
this page is any indication ;-)

"personalizing" it for you ;-)

Yes, the attached screenshot reveals a little more about the user than
he intended i think :-)
Great news on this though.

I would appreciate if those who haven't paid for their router to either
leave the money at Bryght (if that's where you got it) or send it to:

Data Laundry
2339 Yew St.
Vancouver
V6K3H1

If you need a receipt email me.

I am totally out of stock - if there are any kicking around please let me
know. If anyone wants to trade a Meraki FreeTheNet router for a flashed
"MerHaki" - that will soon be possible after a little more testing.

Thanks,
Mike

Now they're trying to sell me wholesale watch winders and table skirt
clips. I think google ads is losing its mind!

Ah well. Enough of this.
