OK folks,

It's not on it's final freeserve space yet but opinions sought for
<URL: http://www.pedt.demon.co.uk/chapel/>

Oil paintings provider [and antique dealer but we are not putting much
at all on the site for it yet] so the galleries a bit bigger bytewise
than I would like them to be but informed opinion shows that people will
wait a bit longer than normal if they are interested in buying an oil
painting. Comments appreciated.

Already known there is a spelling mistake in the title if you go to it
before I correct and the meta tags needs inserting so no need to comment
on those two items. Nor on the fact the street map is only being drawn
tonight ;-)

Whilst you're at it then have a gander at The Stress Clinic. Needs a
list of practitioners info but virtually complete. Comments welcomed
- yes this one is going on FS space as well. Before I forget, found at
<URL: http://www.pedt.demon.co.uk/thestressclinic/> client wants larger
text than default but not not entirely happy personally with the size -
any comment ? META tags missing as is remainder of title so no need to
comment as it's already known.

All informed comments and constructive criticism welcomed. Be as brutal
as you like, I don't mind ;-)

AAPOI, I tend to insert titles and meta tags at the end of the cycle
when I can pick up on the final important keywords for *each* page.

Checked out both sites earlier this evening. Very simple sites, nothing
flashy or gimmicky. Simple images and text. Beginning to see a style pattern
for your sites now Pedt.
The Stress Clinic site looks exactly the same in both IE5 and NN if that's
of any help,
But then you probably knew that anyway.
One quibble with this site, the Rainbow image, couldn't you have come up
with something a bit better, reminds me of a rainbow I saw on an amateur's
site for 'My Little Pony'. Sorry.
Generally both sites load fast enough on both NN and IE5 and were reached
OK.
Both practical, nothing over the top.

Well, I'm no expert, but...

Looks nice, loaded quickly, wasn't even too slow on the gallery pages. One
thing I noticed here was that, although the same menu is used throughout the
site, the links for the next gallery pages were included on the left in the
same style etc. My point is that I nearly missed that there was more than
one set of pictures. Maybe a link in the main frame under or above the
first set of pics would be in order.

Also, I noticed that the copyright notice seemed to be centered to the right
hand frame, whereas the main bulk of writing and pictures only takes up part
of this page, and is centered into this width. Does that make sense? :-)
It might look better with the address and copyright being aligned, IMHO of
course.

Oh, on the index page the line "Chapel Antiques offer a very wide range
of....." didn't seem to read very well to me, perhaps getting rid of the
"very" would improve this.

> <URL: http://www.pedt.demon.co.uk/thestressclinic/>

This too looks clean and colourful. With the very straight lines on the
left from the navigation, have you considered making the text fully
justified (this is possible isn't it?) so that it matches on the right?

Maybe I'm being thick but I didn't seem to be able to find a link back to
the homepage from the other pages.

The font size fitted with the feel of the site and looked fine to me, but I
have my monitor set at quite a high resolution so it might not look as good
smaller.

One last thing, the contact details at the bottom of each page create quite
a large gap at the bottom. Do they have to be present everywhere? Could
they be written horizontally so they don't go down as far?

Two good sites overall - HTH Pedt. Please bear in mind that I know little
or nothing.

No alt attributes on gallery jpgs 1 thro 16 (gave up after that) .There is
an alignment problem in 11 Bottom RHS last two imagtes and a text difference
in referencs nos, 12 bot RHS is nonaligned with rest, 14 you lose ref
details.
Other than that, I found it fast enough loading, despite the fact
technically the gallery images are oversized.
By the by, slightly off topic, but wouldn't this have been a prime exception
to the opening another browser window to give a fuller details, as I noticed
only the later galleries had artists names in, and maybe an index would have
helped. It would have been nice to know how many more galleries there were
too, as I have no idea how many I missed.

Nice site tho, clean clear, and under circumstances, fast.

As someone that is in that group that needs reading glasses (no jokes
please) I have a lot of probs with sites with tiny text, but I am completely
with you on this, I found it comfortable to read, and any larger would have
overpowered the background.
Nice to see it with text in now ;-), and I still love that background, and
the arch, Tisn't really a rainbow on my monitor btw, the red is a red ochre,
the blue is a greenish blue, and the green is almost eau de nil, so hardly
My Little Pony!
Very de-stressing which is the intention surely?
Only down point to me, the e-mail form seemed untidy with different sized
text boxes.

Feeling shattered after all this stress looking at your sites, will you book
me in please, pdq ?

Hi Pedt

Somewhat unnerved at the prospect of doing a critique on anything of yours,
but here goes!

Chapel site

The copyright info line at the bottom of the index page would look better to
me if it was centred.

The location page - the text seems a tad close to the black border.

Rather than last/next gallery I would prefer a link to gallery 1, gallery 2,
etc, or at least some indication of how many pages there are! The graphics
downloaded quickly here but I would have quite liked the opportunity to
click on a thumbnail and see a bigger version of some of the pictures.

More information on the pictures would be good - the artist, what size are
they, do they come framed or unframed, how much do they cost, are they
originals, do they have a couple of hundred of each ;-) Do they give
discounts for constructive critism of their site!

Only other point is that on some pages there is a mix of Times and Arial and
the Olde English style font (particularly the contact page) which I find a
tad messy.

I have not looked at the underlying HTML - I doubt I could fault anything
you've written!

Stress site

Yep - don't like the font size, love the cloudy background but find the
rainbow and red text too bright given the subject matter.

No link back to the home page that I could find.

Other than that it downloads quickly due to the lack of graphics (a definite
plus point to my way of thinking), has a nice clean look and says what it
needs to say in a concise matter.

Viewed in IE4.0 and NN4.7. Lovely in IE. In NN, the final paragraph on
each page shifts to the left, and the first few letters of each line are
obscured by the black - in which the two vertical white lines (one pixel
each wide?) are clearer in NN than IE. Are these intentional or
accidental?

Location page - my personal preference would be for a wider blue margin
between the black and the text, more along the lines of the Galleries
page.

Galleries pages - brilliant pics. They download fast enough for me, at
least! I suspect that I would have gone for a separate image for each
one, but I think your approach of one image for the lot probably works
better. This is how I learn! My only criticism is that the codes, on
the white background between the pictures, have a greyish fuzzy
background - I forget at the moment (I'm just back from the pub) the bit
of software I once used with which you can specify "reduce resolution
*here* but keep it sharp *here* but I am sure you know it (if not, I'll
check it out - I've still got it somewhere, although I think it was
Aureate-infested).

I would have liked to have been told how many gallery pages there are,
rather than just keep clicking on "Next Gallery". I gave up at page 18,
not knowing how many more there were to go. An index page, indicating
which artists or which types of paintings (nautical, animals, portraits,
classical etc.) are on each page, with links, would have helped me.

DA609(5) in gallery page 5 could do with being redone - it's not at all
clear.

Where the painter attributions appear, they are hard to read. I would
be inclined either to add fresh text replacing the scanned text, or
leave it out entirely.

Contacts page - typo: paintint for painting. Don't care for the
punctuation, but presumably the text was what the client wants.

Hope this helps! Comments on the other site in a separate posting.

Love the background, hate the rainbow.

Contact page: The form fields are awfully wide in NN4.7, more sensible
in IE4.0. (Who am I to criticise, a mere beginner, but I don't like
"Contact Us" so high up the hierarchy. I prefer it at the end of the
links, thus assuming everyone has looked all the way through the site!)

Stress clinic. Friday shouldn't have a small f.

On each page, I'm having to scroll down, only to get Guy Jacobsen's
address and phone number and your link. Perhaps if the add/phone were
on a horizontal line, with your link centred below? It would save wear
on my wheelie-mouse - and I bet people without wheelie-mousies don't
scroll down as often as those who do have them.

Stress Counselling: you shouldn't have a capital I in Issues after a
semi-colon - but presumably this is client-provided content. However,
why on earth do we have "I will help you" which contrasts badly with
"Contact Us". Does this website refer to one individual (GJ) or a group
practice (as the Practitioners page implies)?

Metamorphic Technique: further criticisms of punctuation - on the
assumption that this is client-imposed, I won't specify them, though.
Intrusive <BR> after the word "gestation". (Haven't checked for any
others elsewhere - viewed all pages full-screen, 800x600. At 1p a
minute it's already cost me nearly 15p so I'm not going back over them!)

Body Talk: Love the last sentence!

Indian Head Massage: No content. Empty skull?

All in all, very nice - and IE identical to NN.

No jokes, but a serious suggestion - for a couple of years now, I have
used specially-made glasses for computer work. The trouble is that the
viewing distance is farther than reading but nearer than distance. My
optician happily worked out a prescription for the distance I gave him
(measured with a bit of string!) and made me up cheap plastic-framed
glasses for around UKP40. I can't read a book with them, or watch TV
with them, but they're ideal for my monitor.

The Chapel Antiques site:

Dunno about that lilac background. I also think the nav bar would've
been better in frames, especially for the gallery pages, so visitors don't
have to go find it when they want to visit the next gallery.
In fact, relating to Julia's post about the gallery navigation, perhaps
if you included a "previous gallery | next gallery" link at the bottom of
each set of prints, and perhaps grouped them either by scene or by artist,
or period etc.. in tha actual nav bar. I agree that it should perhaps be
made clearer how many of these pages there are, and made easier to navigate
to the type of painting you are looking for.
Also, for each print I would suggest a hyperlink to a higher res image,
perhaps containing details of availability, price and artist/date/dimensions
etc.. as Julia suggested. If I was buying art online I'd want to see it
properly first and have an idea of it's dimensions.

The Stress Clinic

I agree with the earlier remark about the rainbow. It looks a bit like a
Natural Law Party manifesto! Like the choice of background for this one.
Contact Information form could maybe use a tidy. I think center-aligning
the form fields looks a bit scruffy as they are all different lengths, I
think left alignment would look smarter. How about splitting the form
headers and the fields into seperate table columns, left and right?
I was also thinking as I looked through, maybe for each of the different
therapies a small image of somebody undergoing the therapy would make it
look more interesting and appealing. It's hard to figure what a few of the
techniques would actually be like so I think the pages could benifit from
photos. Also it seems the pages are a little thin on content. If you are
dedicating a page to each individual therapy then I personally would expect
a longer page with more information.
Oh by the way, scratch the "Natural Law Party" comment earlier, I think
these guys are probably party members!!!

Didn't bother looking at the source for either site, can't imagine I'd
find much to comment on. Later dude,

With regard to the stress clinic site, I must say I did like the background,
I am sending some pics of various rainbow effects. Tell me what you think.

I disagree - with so many Gallery pages, visitors must be given the

Good point. In that case I'd say pre/next links at the bottom of each
page of images would be useful, saves people going from top to bottom and
back again to get to the next page.

Actually as I am short sighted too, I wear varifocals, so its not too bad, I
just get annoyed at constantly having my head tilted back, and never realise
till I have a stiff neck!
Its better if I get round to putting the disposable contacts in, as I have a
pair of cheapo reading glasses (as suggested by optician) that do the job
nicely. But these days, its usually simpler just to put me specs on unless I
am off out to charm the fellas ;-)

Hi Pedt - I was going to write a big follow up, but didn't get chance
'till tonight - then I found that everyone else has already covered what
I would've said :o)

Just to concur on a few points:
<URL: http://www.pedt.demon.co.uk/chapel/>

1) Strange looking vertical lines in L/H menu bar, as Molly mentioned.

2) I too would've liked some categorisation to the images, as well as
more info on how many galleries there are. I'd really like to see
higher res images as well - maybe up to 60K if you click on a picture
to enlarge it?

3) Is the alt text for the Chapel Antiques logo *supposed* to be "Pisces
Framing and Fine Art Gallery"?

4) Some of your other alt text has *two* spaces after the quote - rather
than your usual one. e.g. ALT=" Art Galleries ".

5) There's a typo in your main page's title - Chapel Antiques - fine
original oil painting and antique furntire specialists.
^^^^^^^^
6) Whoops, make that *every* title :o)

<URL: http://www.pedt.demon.co.uk/thestressclinic/>

1) I *liked* these pages - plain, but fresh and clean. I particularly
liked the near instantaneous page downloads - Nice work.

2) One thing I didn't like was the anti-aliasing of your transparent
gifs - the white bits at the edges looked a *bit* "sloppy" - hope you
don't mind me saying so? :o) Would they look particularly bad with
hard edges?

3) As I was surfing, I immediately thought that the smaller rainbow on
the other pages would be the home link - though it wasn't :o)

4) Like Bagsy, I would've read more explanations about the techniques.
Perhaps, if you're keeping scrolling down, then maybe provide deeper
content on a further page? Or maybe links to further reading,
something like that.

Anyway, I liked them both - though I expected to.

I tried the Lynx viewer at <URL: http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.htm
l> - it couldn't open your pages - though I'm not sure why?

Don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet, but on my system, the 3rd

Interesting. Being short sighted, my glasses [which work fine for

tiny fonts with no option to change ... heads off to get some string.

Yes, I'd agree with this, and, as it's a 'trial' site for them to see it
it's worth them selling over the 'net - personally I think it is - then
going the whole hog on full index architecture *now* didn't seem
appropriate as we are likely to have a big redesign into all index in
the future when they get the full graphics done on CD-ROM and we have
artist details, picture size, price with/without frame etc.

Will be looking into as they don't show here. suspect I'll need readjust
a few pixels.

So would I but the material I got to work with was a set of .bmp files 5
small pics wide and 9 deep that they wanted compressed into one page -
yuck. Large graphics to follow - when they can get them done :-( as is
the categorisation of images - which probably means a whole raft of work
to reorganise.

Errm, No. *blushes*.

Yes, deliberate. Running it through a text to speech converter recently
bought I found some words that start with a vowel seem to run into each
other with one space. Slowly switching everything to two spaces before.
Yes I know an art gallery site is perhaps not going to be frequented by
the visually impaired but consistency is important ;-)

I, errm, did point this one out in my original post ;-)

Good, I was a bit worried about this but others say the same so fairly
happy ;-)

Hmm, another job ;-) - actually 'alt' references are the last job I tend

width= missing - well spotted as it appears OK here. At least a quick
fix. Out of interest, some tests have shown that, is that if you have
two or more tables, and miss width= on the second one in <TD>, then IE
tries to use the *previous* table width unless the text/graphics won't
fit as do a few NN versions. Interesting.

Looking into this as I can't see it on the headings on the machines I
tried it on so far.

It will be. I deliberately did not put a text link back for this one as
all the relevant info is on each page and to add one would have taken me
over a 640x480 screen for the menu bearing in mind the browser overhead
on the screen.

There are about two paragraphs of text to come for each treatment plus
[at a later date] link to a page of deeper info plus a picture or two
[whoever mentioned that] and links to further info. So that will, in due
course, solve all the comments raised here.

General bits:

>I tried the Lynx viewer at <URL: http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.htm
>l> - it couldn't open your pages - though I'm not sure why?

It uses the http 0.9 spec and many web servers now use 1.1 so it cannot
understand the replies - early versions of NSCA and Spry Mosaic do not
work either for the same reason so I've to stop supporting N/S M under
V4 but Lynx 2.x (if you want a local copy: <URL: http://www.lynx.org/>
for a version that works in Win) are OK as they support 1.1

> Beginning to see a style pattern for your sites now Pedt.

Pastel background colours, try not to change default text if poss, quick
loading, works with as many things as possible you can throw at it, full
index architecture, full noframes on framed sites, easy to find your way
around, optimised graphics, multiple tables rather than one long one and
is only as complicated as necessary are what I work to. With so many new
sites needing V4+ browsers, java/javascript enabled, flash plugins, etc.
to work then it's a nice niche market to be in - especially when you can
show potential clients a site in a few browsers when some of them do not
have any means to see the content. ;-) Not to say that DHTML, Flash, etc
should not be the tool to use for particular types of sites. I work 'bog
standard' browsers where a 'standard' = NN2+, IE3+, Opera2+, Lynx2+, N/S
M4+. Missed on the above list: site coherence and 35K or less on opening
page though I aim for 20-25K for commercial sites on the first page.

Thanks again for everyone's comments.

Ask The Hairy Dog ????

Yes someone did ask and the short list of those I commonly use is linked
via <URL: http://www.network-operations.freeserve.co.uk/> under acronyms
and the small file referenced at the bottom as I posted recently ;-)

Acronyms listed [the small file] at
<URL: http://www.network-operations.freeserve.co.uk/> and follow links.

To save you both going there:

HTH = Hope This Helps
HAND = Have A Nice Day
DKUATB = Do Keep Up At The Back = read the rest of the thread or at
least specific posts ;-)

I'm assuming that all these acronyms arose out of a desire to lower
bandwidth but I think here in f.w.a they are rather outweighing their own
benifits ;-)

No, they did not originate in an attempt to lower bandwidth - the
bandwidth saved would have been miniscule compared to the rest of the
article.

They do save some time in typing replies - which was far more important
on older machines[1] - and, for those who are familiar with the more
common ones, make no difference to the sense of replies etc.

I have put some of the most common on webspace for online consultation
or download.

You do have to realise that those who have been using Usenet for a long
time[2] are well imbued with the use of acronyms and particularly those
that are well known.

[1] The first machine I typed a NetNews message on was a TTY80 dumb
terminal connected to an IBM360.

[2] And that was in 1981.

Well yeah I realise that. I did visit your site for the list of acronyms
but was put off by the filesize you quoted. I suppose I can safely assume
that in 20 years I'll have a full understanding of the better-known ones
aswell ;-)

I had never seen a computer in 1981 (well I was 7) but in 1982 I was
doing this;
10 FOR n=0 to 9
20 PRINT "Kev is ace and Lisa[1] is crap"
30 Next n

Go and get the short list linked from the bottom of the initial
acronym page. This will be added to when I realise a common one
I've just used is not already listed but it will stay short.
