1.Please ensure that the scanner is connected to the computer.
2.please ensure that the scanner is connected to the computer and that the
led light is on.
3.please note that it is not possible to connect the scanner through the usb
device power.
how weird is that.but if I eject it and take the lead from the back of the
computer and then put it back it works ok again.
device manager sees it and tells me that this device is working
properly, obviously it is lying to me ,
any ideas?
thanks

Oh it's one that gets it's power from the usb port then, it would have been
helpful
if you'd mentioned this in your post
Easy way to check is look in the bios pages for anything refering to usb.
If there is then the board has got usn on board, it may just be that you
have a connector
that you can plug a riser into.

Yes it means you do have onboard usb, and it would be best to use this
rather than a seperate card.
The problem here is if need to by the riser that plugs onto your m/b it
needs to be correctly wired to match your board.
You should have a connector on the board which has two rows of 5 pins (or 4
one side 5 the other)
it probably says usb next to it on the board.
I don't suppose you have the m/b manual ? If not do you know or can you find
out what your m/b is ?
Well it usually has some kind of ID on the board, you can also find out from
the bios but it's
easier to look on the board, same goes for finding the usb connector.
Without knowing either there's not a lot you can do but put up with the
problem, or get a scanner
that uses external power, or try a different usb card.
thanks for all your help

Another alternative would be to by a switch box and cable for £15.
