Today I bought a new mouse, one of those with a scrolling wheel,
thinking I would just have to turn off the system, swap the two mice
and turn on again. However, the instructions 'strongly recommend'
that I should uninstall all other mouse drivers and applications
before installing the new mouse software. I haven't a clue how to do
this.

Is it really necessary and if so, can someone tell me how to go about
it in 'for Dummies' language.

TIA

You don't say what type of mouse you had or bought.
Ps2, usb, AT etc
If you are installing a usb mouse it is vital you remove any dos drivers
loaded from autoexec.
If it's AT or ps2 then it is probably just using standard windows drivers.
To check no special ones are installed and remove them, first check in
add/remove programs
that there are non in there, if you see a mouse driver uninstall it.
Go to control panel > system >device manager and remove the mouse driver
from there if one exists.
Shut down to dos, use edit to view the autoexec.bat and check there are no
dos drivers there, if so rem the line out or remove it completely.

Looking at the age of your system I'd guess you don't have PS2 or USB
choices, so a straight swap has a good chance of working. One way is to
check driver file details in Device Manager for Mouse driver, if it's a
standard serial mouse with Microsoft drivers, click on "Standard Serial
Mouse", click on "Remove", shut-down, swap mice and reboot. It should
find the new mouse and install it.

If there's no mouse entry in Device Manager, the driver will be loading
from your autoexec.bat file and that line (something like
"C:\MOUSE.COM") should be deleted.

If the Kensiko is standard, it may not even ask for your Kensiko drivers
disk, but you can run their install program later.

If you have the MS Intellimouse software or similar installed, there'll
be an entry in Add/Remove Programs to uninstall first.

hi - if you are still having trouble with your mouse - I bought a mouse with
a rollerball - brilliant, however you need to go to My Computer, then
Control Panel and look for any other mice that you have, and then uninstall
them by just pressing the buttons that they ask for. Then install your new
mouse and restart your computer - that should do it - if not - try boiling
oil, leaving it out in the rain etc etc

I've got a trackerball' it did not need any drivers as windows already had
them, i also use a scrolling mouse, again i don't use the drivers though i
did install them at one point before i had
to do a re-format etc. The scrolling and mouse work from Windows but the
extra features
like the magnify don't work without the proper drivers.
