Any solutions to the following

Scandisk stops at about 20 per cent despite
trying all settings.
Defragment stops at about 9 per cent and after 10 attempts gives up with a
DEFRAG 004 error message. Again all settings have been tried.

usual culprit is screen saver?
Or:
disable all programs running in the background via Ctrl+alt+Del. except
Explorer & Systray.
