In 1967, wayward teenager Suzanna (Winona Ryder) is sent to a psychiatric
hospital on a dodgy diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. Despite
her relative sanity she soon becomes submerged into the chaotic world of the
other inmates. Realising she must reclaim her life before it is too late,
she attempts to seek assistance and understanding from the hospitalĽs head
psychiatrist, but she faces an uphill battle to prove her sanity in a world
which seems out of control. Osacr nominated Angelina Jolie plays one of her
fellow patients, a charming sociopath who attempts to stage an elaborate
escape. Based on a true story, GIRL INTERRUPTED focuses on small town
attitudes towards women behaving badly at a time when social attitudes
towards women were in a state of flux.
