I am about to redecorate a bedroom that earlier in the year had it's ceiling
stained by a slow leak in the loft (which was quickly rectified). The
ceiling is paint on lining paper. The paper is still sound but I imagine if
I try to paint directly over the stain with emulsion it will show through as
it is a brown colour.

What would people suggest as an "undercoat" upon which I could simply
emulsion?

TIA

Graham

just normal solvent/oil based u-coat.

You could use the stain/damp paint but at £4 per 250ml tin its a bit exp!
and added to that if you just emulsion over it it'll boot out the pigments
in the paint.

Tom,

Can you recommend such an undercoat - and you believe it will then keep the
stain away from the new decor?

Will I be OK putting emulsion (water-based) on top of a solvent based
undercoat?

Thanks

I've always used the "real" StainBlock stuff and never had any probs. but a
lot of people in various groups have recommended any oil-based paint. I
recently used some white satin finish oil-based paint over a patch on a wall
and emulsioned over it without any problems.

OK, so it sounds like either a gloss undercoat or a satin type paint would
do the trick - the trouble I have is working out whether they are oil-based
... am I corrcet in thinking that if I can wash the brushes in water it must
be water based and therefore I need a tin that says to use spirits?

Cheers and thanks for all the advice,

Graham

Not really. you can now buy emulsifyed oil paints that you can wash in
water.

Look for anything that does NOT say Quick Drying or Acrylic
