What would people suggest as an "undercoat" upon which I could simply
emulsion?

You could use the stain/damp paint but at £4 per 250ml tin its a bit exp!
and added to that if you just emulsion over it it'll boot out the pigments
in the paint.

I've always used the "real" StainBlock stuff and never had any probs. but a
lot of people in various groups have recommended any oil-based paint. I
recently used some white satin finish oil-based paint over a patch on a wall
and emulsioned over it without any problems.

yea its fine because of the very open texture, i was warey until i saw a
decorator of 30yrs doing it in a pub to block nicotine stains

Not really. you can now buy emulsifyed oil paints that you can wash in
water.
Look for anything that does NOT say Quick Drying or Acrylic
