Artist painting onto wood

I have made some wooden sculptures, and now wish to paint on them. Is there
a particular type of paint to use? eg. oils or water colours etc.. and will
it be necessary to prepare the wood either before or after painting, or even
both! - I do want to leave the natural colour of the wood beside the artwork
untouched, so this will prevent the use of a primer.
