The Herald - 20/07/09

Ryanair is planning a major reduction in services from Prestwick
Airport this winter, The Herald has learned.

Its seating capacity is expected to be cut by nearly a third and its
number of routes from the Ayrshire hub reduced from 24 to 16.

He said: "I have no doubt that, in the next 18 months, business will
increase at Prestwick, and Ryanair is committed to keeping five planes
based at the airport."

That should quell speculation from the doom and gloom brigade.

Quells' nothing.FR have and are reducing frequency, based aircraft and
routes from PIK. This is fact not speculation or rumour..!!! Of course
Mark Rodwell is going to talk up his business, hardly likely to talk
it down is he? ''Oh shit there goes another 1/3rd of our business on
top of what is already gone'' Can't see that statement being made...
It's his job after all.... No denial from FR ''Not discussing
speculation or rumour'' you can take as a big 'yes we are, but don't
tell anyone yet' .....FR new base in EDI will kill off PIK as a
passenger airport [eventually] One base in Scotland is suffice.

No chance of FR moving the PIK base to Abbotsinch then Madam?

In any eventuality I doubt PIK will be finished as a passenger
airport.

I wouldn't think they will base anywhere barr EDI... As my opinion
states above ''One base in Scotland is enough'' Not saying they won't
ever fly from GLA? I just say they won't open a regular base there
[imo] of course.... Your opinion that PIK will always be a passenger
airport? Mine differs and I can see the distant writing on the wall
getting bigger... For me they are in a lose, lose scenario...

They are. Things an only get worse between Ryanair and Infratil as Infratil
have just lost half of the measly revenue they were banking on this winter -
and they were already in dire straights. They can't concede and make it
cheaper to Ryanair so the have no bargaining power. PIK never has since the
70's. Even in the healthy growth period of the late 90's today's scenario
was looming large as soon as things went sour. This is the problem with
having all eggs in one basket and the one dominant carrier being in a
position to call the shots. It's never been an envious business position to
be in. Infatil inherited this situation and they know it's not sustainable.

Whether Ryanair keep the two base formula in lowland Scotland and set up at
GLA in addition to EDI or just have EDI remains to be seen but there doesn't
look to be any long term future of Ryanair at PIK unless something major
changes.

There doesn't appear to be any benefits to Ryanair setting up at
Abbotsinch if they ditch their PIK base. This from
http://www.infratil.com/content/view/1913/1/

"How does Glasgow Prestwick Airport compare/compete with Glasgow
Abbotsinch?"

BAA's Glasgow Airport at Abbotsinch is 8 miles from west of the city
centre and located on a very constrained land holding bound by two
rivers and motorway with restricted runway length (2650 metres
compared to Glasgow Prestwick Airport's 2987 metres). Abbotsinch also
restricts its night time operations due to noise issues. It handles
around 8.8m passengers per year and approximately 40 airlines.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport has the advantage of an unconstrained
operating environment and the ability to process all aircraft types,
24 hours per day and without the fog and other weather and operational
restrictions faced by the airport at Abbotsinch. Glasgow Prestwick
Airport also offers airlines significant pricing advantages and a very
flexible operating environment with no runway, apron or terminal
congestion issues.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport is connected to downtown Glasgow by a direct
rail link accessed via the Airport's own railway station which is
integrated into the main passenger terminal. Services run every 30
minutes with a journey time of 40 minutes. All of Glasgow Prestwick's
passengers benefit from a 50% discount on their rail fare anywhere in
Scotland. Glasgow's other airport at Abbotsinch has no rail link
requiring an expensive taxi ride into the City or a convoluted shuttle
bus to Paisley Station and then a connection using the same railway
services that connect to Glasgow Prestwick Airport. Glasgow Prestwick
has also benefited greatly from the recent upgrading of the main A77
Glasgow link dual carriageway to Motorway status for much of its
length. This cuts the journey time to the City Centre to 30-35
minutes...
---------

Does that 50% rail discount still apply?

Ask Infratil which airport they'd prefer on there portfolio? The bumf
above is a Sales Tool which hasn't been succesful as they would have
liked and as a previous 'boss' at PIK stated in an interview [no link]
'Easyjet should be operating out of Glasgow Prestwick, but they are
not and it's a shame that we have been unable to attract their
business'. Glasgow International airport, Glasgow Abbotsinch airport,
Glasgow Donald Duck airport or which ever you want to call it is the
only airport able to meet todays aviation needs required in this
Country and it will soon have a heavy rail connection, the motorway
infristructure is being greatly improved [vastly even] and a runway
length of 2650m hasn't yet constrained it's use, as regular heavy
aircraft use the facilities daily without constraint [modern widespan
new generation aircraft won't require 3000m+ runways anyway and
they'll slot right in at GLA without development needs and high spend]
In my eyes the future for GLA is bright, but I see the future of PIK
as dull as an Icelandic Summer.

Ehhh neighbour. What are you on about? You quoted badly and your
