You see here:

a scroll of mail

t - a scroll of mail

You read the scroll of mail. It says: "Each of the next 5 rules will
pick up one of those stones, and describe a restriction that the stone
places on it."

Each of the next 5 rules will pick up one of those stones, and
describe a restriction that the stone places on it.

Commentary-
The piles/heaps that similarly named items appear to group themselves
in is generally indicative of commonality or difference between the
items. We are still within the orbit of the text adventure, which
might be indicative of a cultural slant within our group. Curious.

Wasn't meant to be texty; that was actually an attempt to imitate
NetHack's style of messaging (I'm in a NetHack tournament at the moment,
so it was on my mind). However, I think I have an idea as to how to make
it less texty; I may try that in a future rule.

I play a lot of ADOM myself. But the message version there "Would you
like to examine your inventory?" has less traction than "DYWYPI?".
