Akwa Ibom State has been in the news recently over child-
witchcraft. The phenomenon, usually discussed in hushed tunes
found its way into the public arena when a British Television
Channel, 'Channel 4' featured one Sunday Williams, a "Bishop,"
who claimed he had killed 110 children who were said to have
witchcraft. Williams claimed that the state, with 3.9 million
people, had 2.3 million witches and wizards.
Expectedly, the issue has remained a major concern to Akwa Ibom
State Government, who have flatly denied the Bishop's claims.
But, while the debate rages as to whether or not there is any
iota of truth in the Bishop's claims. Many analysts have said
that it would be wrong to simply dismiss them. While disagreeing
with the Bishop's figures, they say that there are indeed
pointers to the existence of witchcraft. "It is a bit difficult
to deny the existence of witchcraft, when an under-aged can
predict something sinister and it will to come to pass," says
Mrs Mary Duke, a housewife.
Among areas said to have more children involved in witchcraft
are the riverine areas like Eket, Mbo, Onna and Okobo.
Such children are usually on the streets in their local towns,
while some have found their ways to the streets in Uyo, the
state capital. In some cases, all that is needed for parents to
begin to suspect their children of witchcraft, is a
manifestation of certain "strange" behaviour.
Others are "identified" any the presence of an "inexplicable"

Prime Minister of Congo, was murdered. The circumstances of his
death remained a mystery, the identity of his killers unknown.
Now, forty years later, fresh scrutiny of documents held in
government vaults and the testimony of those who were there at
the time reveal a story of international intrigue and betrayal.
In 1956 Lumumba was a post office clerk; four years later he
would be prime minister. In between he had been an "evolue" -
one of Congo's tiny black middle class, a beer salesman and a
prisoner, twice - once for embezzlement, though he claimed his
motivation was political, and once for his political activities
and inciting unrest.
Perhaps it was prison that radicalized him. By 1958 he had co-
founded a political party, the National Congolese Movement, the
MNC.
Lumumba was the only Congolese leader who rose above ethnic
difficulties and tribal preoccupations that killed all the other
parties."
Larry Devlin, the CIA station chief in Leopoldville received
orders from Washington to await the arrival of "Joe from Paris".
"I recognised him as he walked towards my car, but when he told
me what they wanted done I was totally, totally taken aback",
says Devlin now. "Joe from Paris" was better known as the CIA's
chief technical officer, Dr Sidney Gottlieb. He had brought with
him a special tube of poisoned toothpaste. Devlin's job was to
get the toothpaste into Lumumba's bathroom.
"It would put the man away", recalls Devlin, who was aghast at

In my high school, Nnobi High School, Nnobi, I did notice that
students' halls of residence were named after dead white men
like Patterson, prominent Nigerian politicians like Michael
Iheonukara Okpara and finally, one man named Ezeugbana. I was in
my senior year when I found out that Ezeugbana was a prominent
Nigerian army Lt. Cornel who died in Congo . He also happened to
hail from Nnobi.
It all started to come together when my brother, Webster, wanted
to attend the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA). Beside my father
who supported him, the near-universal response he got was a no-
no. Nnobi people stopped joining the army the day Ezeugbana was
brutally murdered in Congo , I found out. The last Nnobi man in
the army, Major Humphrey Chukwuka, later became one of the five
majors who planned the coup of 1966.
In spite of all these connections to Congo , I never bothered to
know what happened in Congo , in Katanga , to Ezeugbana, until
recently.
In 1955, a postal worker who also moonlighted as a beer
traveling salesman named Patrice Lumumba joined the Liberal
Party of Belgium
On September 14, 1960, Joseph Mobutu, with the help of the CIA
planned a coup and overthrew the government of Lumumba. Lumumba
was placed on house arrest but he escaped. On December 1, 1960,
he was arrested by troops loyal to Mobutu in Port Francqui and
flown to Leopoldville . Beaten severely at various detention
centers, on January 17, 1961, he was executed in the bush by
Katanga soldiers under the command of Belgian officers.
One particular incident in the movie will haunt me for the rest
of my life. It was a scene where Lumumba was telling his pilot
to fly him to the breakaway Katanga region and the pilot refused
citing orders from above. And it struck me: there was the Prime
Minister of the largest and riches African nation trying to tame
the ravaging Belgians colonialists while his government plane,
built abroad, of course, was being piloted by a Belgian. When
the pilot refused, Lumumba was helpless.
That scene made me think. How many listening devices are in all
the presidential fleet of African heads of state? What listening
devices are in those imported marbles used to build presidential
palaces across Africa ?
If you are an African and you haven't watched the following
movies; Sankofa, Hotel Rwanda and Lumumba, you should be ashamed
of yourself.

Pope Benedict's household after a chorister was sacked for
allegedly procuring male prostitutes for a papal gentleman-in-
waiting.
Angelo Balducci, a Gentleman of His Holiness, was caught by
police on a wiretap allegedly negotiating with Thomas Chinedu
Ehiem, a 29-year-old Vatican chorister, over the specific
physical details of men he wanted brought to him. Transcripts in
the
possession of the Guardian suggest that numerous men may have
been procured for Balducci, at least one of whom was studying
for the priesthood.
The explosive claims about Balducci's private life have caused
grave embarrassment to the Vatican, which has yet to publicly
comment on the affair.
While Catholicism does not condemn homosexuality outright, its
teaching is that homosexual acts "are intrinsically disordered."
The Catechism of the Catholic church states unequivocally,
"Under no circumstances can they be approved." Balducci was
arrested on February 10, suspected of involvement in widespread
corruption. A senior Italian government official, he is alleged
to have steered public works contracts towards favoured bidders.
He has not been charged.
It was during this investigation into corruption that wiretaps
revealed his alleged sexual activity.
In one conversation, Ehiem tells Balducci, "I saw your call when
I was in the Vatican, because I was doing rehearsals ... in the
choir ... in St Peter's."
He then suggests Balducci meet a man who he describes is "two
metres tall ? 97 kilos ? aged 33, completely active." Balducci
is also a senior adviser to the Congregation for the
Evangelisation of Peoples, the department that oversees the
Roman Catholic church's worldwide missionary activities.
Since 1995, he has been a member of one of the world's most
exclusive fraternities ? the Gentlemen of His Holiness, or Papal

Now, for the first time, Jackson and McMahon learned from J.
Edgar Hoover that a friend of Oppenheimer's, Haakon Chevalier,
had suggested to him in 1943 that there was scientific
information that ought to be shared with their wartime Soviet
ally. Hoover reported that Oppenheimer had rejected the overture,
but to Borden's suspicious mind the incident sounded
incriminating. Borden began to wonder if Oppenheimer's
opposition to the H-bomb was motivated by nefarious loyalties to
the Communist cause.
A month later Edward Teller told Borden that Oppenheimer had
wanted to close down Los Alamos after the war. He claimed that
Oppenheimer had said, "Let's give it back to the Indians."
Borden was also told that a Los Alamos security officer believed
Oppenheimer had once been a "philosophical Communist." He also
learned that Oppenheimer's wife, Katherine (Kitty) Puening
Oppenheimer, had once been married to a Communist who had fought
and died in Spain.

Chairman, Editorial Board of The Nation newspaper, Mr. Sam
Omatseye, who in the twilight of his professional calling should
have been a beacon of hope to younger journalists, threw decorum
and ethics of journalism to the dogs in his column of Monday, 24
November 2008.
In a despicable approach to column writing, Omatseye labelled
the Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, a "beast".
Currently, it has been established beyond any iota of doubt that
Iyabo lied to Nigerians; the Senate of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria; and journalists, who abandoned ethics and wrote fiction
about the incident. From unfounded claims that she was dancing
at the altar during a non-existent thanksgiving service when she
was 'attacked' by Daniel's security team to fictions about her
hand being twisted, the public now know that the senator
brazenly deceived and manipulated almost everybody.
There is enough foul air around to last a lifetime with the way
the Iyabo story was concocted and reported. It does the noble
profession of journalism no good if 'veterans' of the profession
continue to write as if nobody can question what they do. The
reading public is not fooled. But more than that, Nigeria's
young democracy will be the loser in the situation, where one of
the major pillars of democracy is being gradually destroyed.
Omatseye and persons like him should allow the truth to nurture
their conscience and not Keske as the current deliberate
inaccuracies have shown.

1. A vacuum system for a boiling-water nuclear reactor guide
tube comprising:
a vacuum source;
a vacuum tube coupled to said vacuum source;
a disk having an axis, a top side and a bottom side, said disk
defining axial, radial and circumferential directions, said disk
having a vacuum port located at a first circumferential off-axis
position on said disk, said vacuum port permitting fluid
communication between said top side and said bottom side of said
disk, said disk having aperture means for fluid communication,

fins, and from between said fins through said vacuum port to

adaptor being rotated so that said vacuum port rotates at least
360 degrees about said axis, said annular ridge isolating said
central hole from said vacuum source.
To facilitate handling, fissile fuel is typically maintained in
fuel elements. Typically, these fuel elements have a
corrosionresistant cladding. The fuel elements can be grouped
together at fixed distances from each other in a fuel bundle. A
sufficient number of these fuel bundles are combined to form a
reactor core capable of a self-sustaining chain reaction.
Neutron-absorbing control rods are inserted into the core to
control the reactivity of the core. The reactivity of the core
can be adjusted by incremental insertions and withdrawals of the
control rod.
Each control rod is housed within a vertical guide tube which
ensures the vertical orientation and motion of the control rod.
The control rod is moved using a control rod drive mechanism
which is at least partially housed in a stub tube which also
serves to support the base of the guide tube. The base of the
guide tube has a diameter greater than the diameter of the stub
tube so that the guide tube base can be a disk with a central
hole through which the control rod drive uncoupling rod is
mechanically coupled to the control rod.
Given that the control rods are the primary means for regulating
reactor output, it is essential that the control rod drives
remain fully functional. However, dust, sediment and various
foreign objects falling into a drive mechanism housed in a stub
tube can impair control rod drive functioning. Potentially, the
control rod mechanism could jam, preventing control rod
insertion and withdrawal. Alternatively, the foreign material
can prevent the control rod drive mechanism from being removed
for maintenance.
In the course of the present invention, foreign material,
including rust particles, oxide dust, water impurities, and
occasionally larger items, were found at the base of guide tubes.
Turbulence, especially during removal and insertion of control
rods could disturb these materials causing them to fall into the
stub tubes, where they could impair control rod drive mechanisms.
It was determined that sweeping was not an effective method of
removing these materials from the guide tube base. Vacuums were
problematic because they were difficult to position. Also, if
the vacuum were great enough to remove the bulk of the material
on the guide tube base, it could also remove control rod drive
components from the stub tubes. For example, a control rod drive
uncoupling rod could be pulled into the vacuum. What is needed
is a system for cleaning control rod guide tubes which removes
the bulk of material deposited on the base without disturbing
the control rod drive mechanism.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
The preferred embodiment of the present invention is designed
for use in a nuclear reactor 100 comprising a reactor vessel 102
and its internals, as shown in FIG. 1. Heat is generated within
the core 104 of reactor 100, which includes fuel bundles 106 of
fissionable material. Water circulated up through core 104 is at
least partially converted to steam. A steam separator 108
separates steam from water, which is recirculated. Residual
water is removed from the steam by a steam dryer 110. The steam
then exits reactor 100 through an steam exit 112 near a vessel
head 114.
The amount of heat generated in core 104 is regulated by
inserting and withdrawing control blades 116. Control blades 116
are vertically extending elements with cruciform cross sections.
They include rods of neutron-absorbing material, such as hafnium.
To the extent that a control blade 116 is inserted into core 104,
it absorbs neutrons that would otherwise be available to promote
the chain reaction which generates heat in core 104.
Vacuum head 306 comprises a disk 402, an annular ridge 404, a
pair of guide fins 406 and 408, and a pole adaptor 410, as shown
in FIG. 4. A vacuum port aperture 412 through disk 402 and a
ribbed hose coupling 414 welded over aperture 412 constitute a
vacuum port 416. In addition, two inlet slots 418 and 420 are
formed through disk 402. A top end 422 of pole adaptor 410 is
configured for locking engagement with pole 308 for rotating
vacuum head 306. Ribbed hose coupling 414 is designed for secure
fitting with vacuum hose 304.

So when, for instance, he says "this nation has got a deficit
because we have been through a war," people might begin to
wonder whether he is telling the truth. They might wonder if the
13 percent state-college tuition hike in Maryland or the $1

The Sweet, Sweet Side of Nuclear Weapons
In Washington last week, at the Army War College's sumptuous
officers' club, two admirals and their wives gave a little party
to commemorate the dissolution of Joint Army-Navy Task Force No.
i, which staged Operation Crossroads at Bikini. An East St.
Louis group of bakers sent a cake, made out of tiny angel-food
puffs, in the shape of an atomic explosion. Vice Admiral W.H.P. (
"Spike") Blandy, Crossroads commander, and Mrs. Blandy were
photographed gaily cutting the cake, while Rear Admiral F. J.
Lowry stood happily by .
The picture made the Washington Post's society page. It also
made a lot of people indignant and unhappy...the Rev. Mr. Davies [
pastor of a Unitarian church in Washington--ed.] thundered: "An
utterly loathsome picture. If I spoke as I feel I would call it
obscene.... How would it seem in Hiroshima or Nagasaki to know
that Americans make cakes of angel-food puffs in the image of

5.3 The Alarm Clock/Sloika (Layer Cake) Design
This idea predates the invention of staged radiation implosion
designs, and was apparently invented independently at least
three times. It was first devised by Edward Teller in the United
States, who named the design "Alarm Clock". Later Andrei
Sakharov and Vitalii Ginzburg in the Soviet Union hit upon it
and dubbed it the "sloika" design. A sloika is a layered Russian
pastry, rather like a napoleon, and has thus been translated as
"Layer Cake". Finally it was developed by the British (inventor
unknown). Each of these weapons research programs hit upon this
idea before ultimately arriving at the more difficult, but more
powerful and efficient, staged thermonuclear approach.
This system was dubbed "Layer Cake" by the Soviets because it
uses a spherical assembly of concentric shells. In the center is
a fission primary made of U-235/Pu-239, surrounding it is an
(optional) layer of U-238 for the fission tamper, then a layer
of lithium-6 deuteride/tritide, a U-238 fusion tamper, and
finally the high explosive implosion system
