Anything with Louis Jouvet.
Anything by Henri-Georges Clouzeau.

"Pickpocket", by Robert Bresson

"Le Boucher" and "Que la Bte Meure", by Claude Chabrol, both starring
Jean Yanne.

Try Amazon.co.uk for R2 DVDs at a good price with english subtitles.
Otherwise if you live in the USA/Canada and need region 1 NTSC versions,
many French films have been released by Criterion and are sold by
Amazon.com. They may be quite expensive though.

Merci, j'aime Jean Gabin. Le plus grand acteur francais. I have already
looked at films by Marcel Carne, Julien Duvivier and Gerard oury. I tried
Jacques Tati, but found him to be very boring. I am not so fond of this
nouvelle vague movement. Their ideas were great, but the films are not as
good as the films noir preceding them. With the exception of Vivement
Dimanche by Truffaut. I liked that.

This guy Pierre Granier-Deferre looks very promesing, as I like the stories
of the films you propose. He will be on my list definitely. Thanks,

You want to see Jean-Pierre Melville.

Try Le Samoura, Le Doulos, Le Cercle Rouge. They're just outstanding
films noirs. His last movie, Un Flic, was done when he was already very
ill and it seriously pales in comparison to his previous masterworks.
