Subject: slow modem
I have a PC equipped with a mother board ' Asus Cuv4X-E', 256  Mo of memory
live, a pentium3 1Ghz, and a modem 'Motorola SM56 Fax  Modem', and
I use Windows Me like operating system.
My problem they is that dice the opening of a session of navigation on
Internet my modem displays the following message:
" connected to XXXX with 33000 bps " and I do not know how  to change
this speed to benefit from the maximum speed which my modem allows
(i.e. 56000 bps).
Also the speed of transfers is always fixed at 2ko/s
Note:  limps of the properties of
modem in ' the manager of périphériques' indicates well that speed
maximum the modem is 57600.
can you help me?
And thank you in advance.

Subject: Re: slow modem
It is probably displaying the actual connection speed with your isp. A
lot will depend on how far away you are from the nearest switching
station. If you put the settings for your modem to 115200 it will show
an estimate of 56K but what you are seeing is probably the reality of
your connection. A hardware driven modem might change this but then
again it might not. You can go to your connection settings, under
advanced and check the hardware (RTS/CTS) box so that it will act as
if it were a hardware driven modem. Try calling your ISP and ask what
modems they use, you can buy the same modem but their is no guarentee
of a higher connection speed. I had the same modem as yours 2 years
ago and after acting badly for about a month it finally died so it
might also be that your modem is dying a slow death. This might be a
consideration if it was working better before or some changes might
have been made on the isp's end of the line. Sorry no simple answer
other than it is probably working as it should. Make sure their is no
static on your phone line, if their is complain to the phone company,
I have had to on a few occassions and they always fixed it.
