Hello--My name is John Buting and I am one of the instigators trying to revive this group. I am a longtime serious amateur with several big telescopes--including a 20" Dob--who is interested in finding some company for stargazing events. I am new to Durango--7 mos--but not to the SW, as I've lived in NM, AZ and CO for the past 15 yrs. I lived in Ridgway for most of the past 6 yrs and am still a member of the Black Canyon Astronomical Society, a small but very active club that does a lot of public outreach at Black Canyon NP and other venues in the Ridgway/ Montrose area.
Charlie Hakes recently revived the Google Group here and scheduled an organizational meeting for tonight at Ft. Lewis. No one showed up but me. He indicated he sent out a reminder notice yesterday, but I did NOT receive that, and am wondering if maybe no one else did either? In any event, I'm posting this to see and gauge further interest. I've already done 4 programs for Durango Nature Studies that have been very successful and well-attended--25-30 guests, including one this past Monday. I am hoping to get some help at the next event on June 8, and anyone who'd like to attend is welcome. Charlie and I also discussed the possibility of holding an event in Mancos the weekend of June 29 as we've had a couple, of requests from the library and state park there. Other possible outings would be Chimney Rock, Mesa Verde and some additional very nice locales I've discovered within 30 minutes of Durango.
Have attempted to attach a few pics of my 20" in the hope of picqing interest. Hope to hear back from some of you...
John Buting
