Subject: API changes in upcoming Reader?

Just caught this post in the Google Reader blog:

http://googlereader.blogspot.com/2011/10/upcoming-changes-to-reader-n...

Are there any API changes we should be prepared for? And are any API calls
being retired?

Thanks,
Nick Bradbury

I really don't like what I'm hearing about the changes to Reader, as a
matter of fact - the loss of the RSS feed for shared items means I can no
longer integrate what I share from Reader into my blog. That's a huge
productivity blow for me...

Basically anything to do with sharing (broadcast tag), liking or friends is
going away. The API calls will still succeed even after the social features
are gone from our UI, but eventually write requests will start to fail (at
the same time as Google Buzz going read-only).

There won't be any new Reader-specific API calls, the Google+ API will be
used.

But eliminating the RSS feed for shared items means Reader will now talk
only to G+ right? Which means it won't echo links out to Twitter or FB
easily (right now it's a one-step process--just hit the SHARE button. that
Send button takes two steps... sounds picky, but that's at least double the
time!). I have over a thousand followers on Twitter & FB and we often talk
about the links I share. They also get echoed to my blog. Losing all of that
is a major pain! That was the *biggest* reason for me to be using Reader.

Hi Justin,

This group is meant for API discussions only, the regular user forums are a
better place to give product feedback.

Ok, let me rephrase: is there now or will there eventually be an API for
accessing the items shared from Reader into G+ as there is now for accessing
the shared items in Reader?

There isn't such an API now (or rather, there won't be one when the switch
to Google+ sharing happens).

Thanks for the information, Mihai. Really sad to see sharing disappear from
the GRAPI since that's a hugely important feature in FeedDemon, but given
that we're using an unofficial API I certainly can't complain about it. So
instead I'll simply thank Google for letting us use the free service for so
long, and then pull my hair out trying to figure out how to handle this
situation in my app.

Note that sharing in Reader will be replaced by +1 buttons very similar to
the version that's available to publishers (
http://www.google.com/intl/en/webmasters/+1/button/index.html), so it may be
an option for you to embed that.

The reading-list used to return friends shared items, when exactly
does it stops happening. Can you please share more details on when the
write requests will start to file, I mean the exact date and time?

Thanks!

It will stop returning shared items when the sharing features are replaced
with Google+ ones (i.e. next week).

Unfortunately I don't have an exact date yet, just sometime in mid-November.
I'll let the group know once there is a more certain date.

Would it be possible to keep them failing silently until a much later
date, say March?

Ripping out like buttons etc. will take some time and then there needs
to be some time for the new versions to be distributed, also to the
users who are slow with new versions.

So, everything else (except for sharing-related things) will keep the same,
right?

If I don't provide any special sharing functions in my app, I shouldn't be
worried, right?

Many of the editors at The New York Times use feeds from shared folders to
share links to sources, blogs, and topics. Sad to see this feature go,
but change happens. It is the only thing that is consistent about the web.

Looking forward to seeing what changes are coming.

Hi Mihai,

It's nice to see quick responses from your side, even though it's an
unofficial API.
Please let us know if write calls can continue to fail for a longer
period of time, so we can plan for changes without being affected.

Thanks!

Hi Mihai,
We are using the unofficial GRAPI alongwith Google OAuth authentication to
download starred/shared/liked items, and I understand that the shared and
liked feature will be going away. We hope that the 'star' feature will stay.

Our concern is more related to the 'write'. Currently we edit subscriptions
for a user and edit some labels for him. Will these edit / POST unofficial
api's go away ?
thank you ...

No, the rest of the API continues to be as unofficially available as it was
