Get the unread count of a specific feed

Hello,

I am wondering if there is a way to get the unread count of an
individual feed. The use case I am trying to solve is the follow: the
user subscribes to a new feed and I would like to know how many unread
articles there are for that feed - without asking for all the unread
counts.

This is not directly supported, but you can approximate by seeing how many item IDs are unread:

http://www.google.com/reader/api/0/stream/items/ids?s=feed/<feed URL>&n=10000&xt=user/-/state/com.google/read&ot=<now - 30 days>
