Some people have asked where I saw the recent muskrat and whether they build
their lodges in the river. This particular one I saw in Waltham, on the
stretch of the river behind the Shaw's supermarket, right near the
footbridge there. Also, I've enclosed photos of muskrat lodges I've taken at
Great Meadows in Concord. Related to beavers, muskrats do build lodges
especially when it gets cold, and use them as feeding stations. I've never
seen any along the river and assume it's because these critters can burrow
into the river banks to live and feed. If anyoone out there has seen lodges
along the river, I'd like to know about it! Thanks, Carole

Never saw a lodge, but did see a muskrat kind of half buried in the river bank near Perkins.  He was covered by leaves and mud with a bit of his tail sticking out, and he moved when I got too close.

How do you tell a muskrat from a beaver from a woodchuck?  Do woodchucks tend to go in the water?

More wildlife -

A couple of weeks ago, I was driving home from the Arsenal Center at about 8:30 pm and saw a large shape on the left side of the road.   On the right side of the road near Bay St, there was a large coyote wandering around on the lawn in front of the houses.  The car in front of me slowed down, the coyote strolled slowly across the street, then trotted into the woods on the path next to the yacht club.

We are now carefully watching our small dog when she goes out after dark!
