so. are we gonna make one. Nepal's first supercomputer?

I'm game to do what I can to make it happen. If someone wants to take a shot at pricing it out that will be a good start.

Not to discourage you but inform, It is better talk to Muni Bahadur Shakya.
He made first linux cluster based super computer way back. Probably he
worked on Linux and OpenMosix. Even LTSP + OpenMosix combination does
a good work.

Wish you all the best.

I worked on test-for-self in my own lab in 2007 and dropped as I found
no practical application of such a deployment for my own need. It is
good for a learning purpose but be clear with your objective and go
ahead so that no distraction should limit you after you work.

My final suggestion, do it for personally if you want to work on it,
not because some one will give a credit to your work !!!

My wishes are with you.

God knows if it will be useful but it sure will be fun. And that I'd good enough for me. Karkhana i.e our hacker space that will come online in mid oct might the best place to attempt this ( or some cool variant of it) . So who,s in? And who knows enough about pi to give us and initial briefing? I'll workon acquiring a few of the suckers to sand box with

meanwhile India is producing first ever most powerful supercomputer by itself as news in siliconindia revealed, so, we must be able to create one and make use in government data mining, police data, locality data and population statistics processing !!!!

2500 + 400 (32000 rupees)  = 2900 so lets say 3000 dollars or about 240000 rupees including momo/coke for the late nights of work :-) an effort for sure but not undoable. lava's suggest approach of finding a sponsor is one great method. another we can consider is crowdfunding. more will come up as we brainstorm.

so i just ordered 4 of them... but they are are back-ordered as much as 3 months. this is good news because it gives us time to plan our strategy. i say everyone interested get together in person and plot how we want to proceed.

a couple of my thoughts:
- someone want to take the lead on compiling a nice little briefing on the raspberry pi, how it works etc and become technical group leader? i would love to be brought up to speed on it, also as more people join the project it will be nice to have a set orientation to give them
- space to construct and keep the machine. plus reliable power at the space. (this i can provide if the team approves after examining the space)
- lets not just replicated the design used in the link. lets most def understand it, use it as a foundation and try alternate methods where we can.

I agree Sakar, crowdfunding is way to go as you suggested. Could You, Rhoit, Bobby, Chandan first make a team ? then make sequential steps until we need to desogn parallely, Its like buiolding Big Cloud in those limited machines. Correct me if i am wrong.
I also agree with ur idea that we dont do old steps, but new innovative , our own if possible.
Lets start to get quotations of hardware from 3 vendors.

dear rabi dai,
this is not the project one person can easily do. we are not genious like Muni Bahadur Shakya sir.

time have changed we can find hundred of application to be run on these powerful machines. something
like statistical machine translation which we did last month in ku summer school, trust me on this one is really really takes lots of time.

or something like rendering 3D some ray tracing will take hell out machine.

it will really awsome if we are able to pull off this project and present as tribute to Muni Bahadur Sir.

Thanks for all this effort. We want to be seen on international map of open source contributors and real performers. once we complete this it helps us more recognition in days to come and that will pave initiatives for future generations to follow path set by us.
Rhoit, regarding funding yes, we will talk and decide how to raise it.

Hi All,

The raspberry pi bakers group meeting#1 is still on. I look forward to seeing you all and cooking up something tasty.

The deets are below:

Date: Oct 7, Sunday
Time: 4 PM
Number: 9802072527

If you are prefer landmark based navigation to map reading... come to City Center Mall and proceed down the one way street towards Galaxy school. You will come to the Valley Petrol Pump in Gyneshwor... this is a sign that you are close. As you go forward, on the other side of the street you will see the USEF building... this is another sign that you are close. A few houses down you will see a Mazda dealership... this is a sign that you are closer still. Your next landmark is a big green gate with a large yellow building on the other side. If it helps anyone this used to formerly house 'International Primary School'. The green gate is between a building underconstruction and a little shop the fills the gas for car AC's.

If you hit the Gyneshowor chowk you have gone too far.

Can I get some RSVP's so that I can get a rough head count of how many to expect?

For all of you interested in experimenting with Raspberry Pi in Nepal. The Pi Bakers group is getting its oven's warm. For the moment the group is still open, as most of us are starting on the ground floor... and the more experienced people are going to help us get up to speed with linux etc. Over time the group we will become more discerning about the skills required to jump in.

You can find the group on FB at: http://www.facebook.com/groups/piBakers/

Also the makerspace that will support this group (and hopefully other hackers/makers that want to experiment) has a google group: https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en-GB&fromgroups#!forum/karkhana and a website: http://www.karkhana.asia/

While we will cross-post big events to this list, we don't want to overwhelm this list. So most of the action will happen on the FB page or google group.
