My linux hangs. It has been a couple of times that linux has stopped
responding. Before I used to use Linux Mint 12 with GNOME 3 desktop
for about 4 months and I faced this problem several time. Now, I
switched to Open Suse 12.1 with GNOME 3 desktop enviroment and in 3
weeks this is the third time I am facing such problem.

I seldom faced such problems while using Ubuntu's.

The screen stops responding except the mouse cursor responds to
mouse.

What can I do in such situations except hitting the power button?

What can be the cause of such problems?

How can I avoid hangs in Opensuse 12.1?

Configure your syslog to log all kernel messages to some logfile. That could give more hints as to what might have been the issue.

Read on syslog/syslog.conf/rsyslog.

Don't know about the cause of problem but u can use shortcut key combination : Alt + (Print Screen key) + k  to simply logoff instead of pressing power button.
Hope this will work, i don't have any expert idea about, but i got it somewhere in unix manual book, n it works for me. tq.

It's called Magic Combination Key, it kills every running task and i think it logs you out of the current account rather than restarting the computer.

have to use Nvdia propitiatory drivers instead of OpenGL graphic driver, you can do manual install as it follows :

# sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
# sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
# sudo apt-get update
