Horse industry poses risks
An activist who has been campaigning against Victoria's horse-drawn carriage
industry says the city council needs to take steps to prevent deaths like
one that happened in New York in September from happening here.
"Here in Victoria it seems like every month or two a horse breaks free,"
says Dave Shiskoff, the Canadian correspondent for Friends of Animals.
"These things are happening in Victoria and they're totally unrecorded."
In New York a horse died on September 14 after becoming spooked by a street
performer, breaking loose from its carriage and running into a tree. A
second horse was also spooked, but a passerby tied it to a pole so it could
calm down.
It's only a matter of time until there's a serious accident in Victoria,
says Shishkoff. "There's very good potential the same thing could happen
here."
A recent audit in New York found the horses often work without enough water,
shade or official oversight. At least one councillor was promoting a ban on
the industry.
Following the New York incident Shishkoff sent a letter to mayor Alan Lowe
and the city councillors asking for a meeting to talk about the industry and
the risks it poses to residents, tourists and horses.
