Publishing slow? Does it do anything special?

Hi all,
Usually I use rsync to keep my local copy of a site and the live copy
in sync, however I thought I'd give the Publish feature a whirl, and
it's very slow! Uploading at a maximum 1KB/s, whereas rsync to the
same server will easily get 24KB/s, still not great, but better...
Does publishing a site do anything special? (like make sure links are
all relative to root if you have that option turned on, etc.?) Or am
I good to keep using rsync?
