I have numerous bugs, and most of them are submitted already.
I don't see any thing from the mods.

Is it dead?

Navid,

Don't keep us hanging, Flutter is my favorite and we're not interested
in switching. We're behind you 100%.

I third it!

I think its very very buggy. If someone made a paid plugin that was
supported I'd switch in a heart beat. Flutter is a necessary evil for
me right now.

Matt Mullenweg was here at WordCamp Birmingham this past weekend where
there ended up being a big buzz about flutter. As he was leaving and
saying a final goodbye to me with a handshake, he said, "I really like
what you're doing with Flutter, but I don't like how the plugin
works... So I'm gonna make it better."

The biggest part of what we're going to be doing (for v 1.2) is stabilizing the plugin and making it much lighter.

Which will happen... someday? Honestly just charge for it and make it right. I would easily drop $200 for it if it worked. As it is now I'm spending way more then that in my personal time just trying to make it work for my clients. If I had to do it over again I would not use flutter.

and honestly your answers are consistently vague enough to scare the
heck out of me.

when i see people deliberately putting themselves in the position of
"not making promises", i take it to mean they wouldn't be able to
deliver on such promises.

i'm ready to bounce to magicfields for the next project.

but i'd be stoked if a new player entered the field.

~

ultimately, the thing for me is this: i don't see why this isn't a huge
open source effort. it seems like a popular solution to a huge problem.
if someone doesn't do this right in private soon, it seems it will have
to be supplanted by a more open effort anyway.

~

don't get me wrong, though, Navid: i know well that you work hard & i
value your rather gratuitous contribution to my webbuilding toolkit.
it's cool stuff, otherwise i wouldn't bother talking about where i think
it should be headed.

magicfields is a fork of flutter that is maintained by two ex-flutter
devs, and maybe some other person(s). as i understand, it's a pretty new
project for them, since they only left freshout recently. no idea about
their long-term goals or attention span, but IME they are very
responsive if you email them. the current version of magicfields is just
a cleaned-up version of flutter; according to this thread

http://groups.google.com/group/flutter-support/browse_thread/thread/10b0d233909f79d5#

"Magic Fields has ~80 files less of flutter and ~15,000 lines less of
code. "

magicfields lives here, of course:

I'm looking for other solutions all together... not because of flutter
though, because I think at some point Wordpress itself scales less
gracefully than I'd like. Putting "magical custom fields" through
Flutter has been a great work around, but at its core, I don't think
WP is good enough to handle large traffic sites unless you're hosted
on Wordpress.com.

I'd gladly pay for a working plugin with some support features, such
as this forum. Flutter is such a great tool, I can't image building
Wordpress sites without it.

I hope my question gets answered:

well, sure, if you've got more traffic then you (or your clients) should
be willing to pay more money.

wordpress isn't the best cms -- it's just the cheapest, for what you get.

what we're talking about is a hack and a compromise, but one that a
awful lot of folks are interested in.

I'm going to take a look at magic fields for my next project.

I love flutter but the lack of updates or even recognision of bugs is
disheartening. I have found and posted several bugs which haven't
even had a response to them.

Flutter or MagicFields we should all be grateful these guys have put
forth the effort and have continued the work of the original creator.

We'll definitely be continuing the project - In terms of timeline, the best I can say as of now is that we'll be releasing a new version of Flutter by Nov 7th which will include fixes to the most urgent bugs.

If you want to read more on this and our thoughts about Flutter - http://freshout.us/notebook/path-of-flutter/

We'll also reach out to Matt to see what his thoughts are as well.

Thanks,

I don't get it... MagicFields is exactly the same as Flutter and is
created by the same people as well... Why don't you all just work on
only one of them and continue from there? My guess is that MagicFields
is an updated (and probably, upgraded) version of Flutter. So might as
well help improve MagicFields, don't you think?

bedek,

I think that question should be asked to the people behind MagicFields
who, as I understand, where the ones who left the Flutter project to
start another one.

Still, it's pretty clear in the blog post from Navid that Flutter it's
a side project that currently isn't being developed as a product per
se, so everybody should be grateful enough to use and learn from it,
as doc4 stated, and help the guys in the community as much as possible
(maybe give Freshout a small donation for their work) to keep them
working on it but not to expect a lot of support. Maybe there should
be a more clearly statement that this is an open source project and
that if one wants urgent support, should pay for it.

Personally, I will be looking forward to the next update being on Nov
7th or not.

I think the problem is freshout have kept all the development in house
when there are plenty of people willing to help out in the development
of the project. I think the magic fields people felt that the
development of the plugin had grinded to a hult so went on it alone.
