A local FLOSS group, promoting free libre open source and also open
knowledge has the advantage of acting in the interest of the people of
the area. It is independent of a single project, yet works to help get
people started on partner projects (debian, fedora, openstreetmap,
wikipedia, firefox etc).
For such a group to be effective, it needs to have a NGO status, or
work with another NGO (mozilla bosnia) inside a working group. The
group should be doing the following things :
1. raising money for events (a yearly software conference)
2. organizing training for FLOSS topics in the country( inviting
speakers to come when they are in the area)
3. getting a hacklab or other type of location started.
4. providing a central address for people to come to : IRC channel,
facebook pages, google plus, webpages.
5. Coordinating Localization
Most of these things are being done already by other groups, such as
the debian and mozilla team in bosnia. This group would have members
of both and also bring in international support.
The most important lesson learned in kosovo is that we need to find
young talented people who willing to learn and to give them a chance.
Many of them are not software developers or even experts in
localization. But people who are willing to work on organizing events,
building communities and doing beginner tasks. We need to provide an
infrastructure to motivate and bring in the young people into such an
organization and give them a chance to be successful.
I have started this project in Bosnia after my discussions with Kerim
Kalamujic from Mozilla bosnia. I hope we can build a team and work on
organizing a conference in Bosnia.
thanks,
mike
P.S: Mike, thanks for starting this discussion
