New Thinking on a Future for Young Workers W5
What is happening?
Howard Hampton, working with the Ontario New Democratic Youth and a
volunteer committee, is hosting a special event in his Dialogue for
Change series. It will be a day-long dialogue session called New
Thinking on a Future for Young Workers. The event will bring together
front-line workers, researchers, educators and activists from labour,
community groups, and the NDP to explore the issues confronting young
workers in a changing economy.
In addition to discussion groups and speakers, there will be
multi-media, displays, music, comedy and, in the evening, a cabaret.
When and where is the event?
Saturday, October 25, 9 am - 6 pm, MacDonald Block, 900 Bay St.
(at Wellesley). TORONTO
What is the object of the day?
Howard Hampton and the NDP Caucus want to hear recommendations for
research, debate and action. Dialogue participants will take part in
groups that will share experiences and ideas and come together around
recommendations
Why is this important?
Ontario citizens are rapidly losing patience with the Harris agenda.
To be taken seriously and to defeat Harris in the next election, the NDP
will need solid ideas and plans to make the new economy work for
everyone. This dialogue session is an important step in the road back
for Ontario.
Why is this happening?
Our current economic recovery hasn't offered much hope to many young
workers who find themselves stuck in dead-end jobs or no jobs at all.
To explore solutions to the complex issues confronting young workers
and their future, Howard Hampton is bringing people together. In 1996,
he and the other leadership candidates in the Ontario NDP leadership
race, pledged to engage the Party and the public in a spirited dialogue
over directions for the province, and this event is an outgrowth of that.
It is is just one of many that are taking place and that are being
planned.
What will happen at the event?
After an introduction from Howard Hampton, the event will begin with a
panel on young workers and their future. Participants will then divide
up into breakout groups discussing a range of issues. These breakouts
will meet throughout the day. At mid-day there will be a buffet lunch,
speeches and comedy. Throughout the day there will be art, music, video,
and multi-media, as well as tables and demonstrations set up by
organizations active on the issues of youth and work. In the evening
will be a buffet supper and a plenary session that will bring together
the thinking emerging from the breakout groups.
Who is the keynote speaker?
Keynote speaker is Debora De Angelis, a 21-year old who successfully
organized a union at the Suzy Shier retail franchise in which she
works. Debora, an enthusiastic and animated presenter, has been
featured in many recent news reports concerning youth, work and the new
unionism.
Who may attend?
Anyone.
How do you register?
To register, you must contact the Dialogue for Change events line at
591-5455, ext 567. There is a fee with a sliding scale for people on
low-income. Money should not be a barrier to anyone attending.
How do I get further information?
Leave your name and number (fax and email would be useful as well) and
someone will contact you.
