What is the suggested hardware configuration for a team of 4 (or more) people wishing to share a Flex database over a local network?
At present, our setup features 4 PCs each running XP. The computers are connected using 100Mbs cabling into an ethernet switch. The computer which houses the master database, i.e. our "server", has 3.5Gb of RAM and a pentium 4 processor. Two of the computers are laptops with 3.0Gb of RAM and dual-core processors. The oldest computer has only 512Mb RAM. Strangely, RAM doesn't seem to make much or any difference in the performance of the non-server computers.
We are experiencing extreme slowness and frequent freezing of the program in the non-server computers. Since each person is working on different data, I don't think the freezing is related to editing conflicts. Some computers are interlinearizing, others are using TE, all are consulting the lexicon.
What hardware changes would bring about the biggest improvement? Is there a recommended configuration needed for my "server" computer? I am contemplating replacing one of the laptops with a desktop which would then become the "server" (since it would have the fastest processor).
Is anyone else running 4 or more workstations sharing a Flex database?
