Inside FLEx (7.2.4), if I Export Full Lexicon, LIFT 0.13 XML, I can then open the exported LIFT file in Lexique Pro (3.5), but It doesn't appear that I can edit the project. Is there any way to start an editable lexicon in Lexique Pro based on a FLEx export?

Thanks.

I believe this is a limitation of Lexique Pro, which was first built to display SFM dictionaries and was also given some limited ability to edit SFM. (The main editor people use with SFM files is Toolbox.) When they later added support for displaying LIFT data, it was in read-only mode.

If this is really really important to you, FLEx does have an SFM export feature, but using that older format is a big step backward for a host of reasons.

Either way, any edits you made in Lexique would not take effect back in FLEx anyway, so it would seem cleaner to just do the editing in FLEx, and the electronic displaying in Lexique. (If you're wanting to use Lexique for printing, you may want to consider using Pathway instead. It is a newer solution that integrates nicely with the various Dictionary configuration option in FLEx.)

Thanks.

I'm thinking especially of groups that are wanting to integrate a lot of audio into their lexicons. As far as I can tell, the only way that the audio is useful is to output the lexicon to the web (or to give users the dictionary in Lexique Pro, which is also a nice interface that users can navigate).

I know there's Webonary for FLEx --> web output, but I like Lexique Pro's web output a lot better. It seems more compact, and you can browse (not just search).

So, on the whole, when I'm teaching FLEx to groups, I would recommend FLEx --> Lexique Pro --> Web, at least until Webonary is in a better place from a user standpoint. In the original question I was basically wondering whether during the intermediate step (Lexique Pro), we can make any edits. I guess not!

PDFs can contain audio. They could be links or embedded. I have requested that PrinceXML embed the audio in the same PDF file. It is on their short list of items to do.

But when I use Pathway to output (via Prince), I don't get links. Is that configurable in the Configure Pathway tool?

Yeah, from the little I've seen, I would agree that at the moment Lexique is a more convenient (and cheaper) way to get a dictionary hosted online.

But stay tuned for any news regarding Language Forge (another nice tool from Palaso). This should be the best solution once it's ready, since it plans to support browsing, searching and editing, both online and using client software (WeSay and/or FLEx), all synced using Chorus.

This is good news. Will it be able to work as a "public face" online dictionary, with the collaborative element accessible only to collaborators?

Thanks.

I believe so, but I don't really know. I'm not sure what the specifics will be regarding access control. You can email Palaso if you need the details on that. (I don't know what approach they'll take to beta testing, but if you have a high tolerance for experimental software and are willing to be a guinea pig, you might mention that to them as well.)
